Hey guys,

Has anyone ever looked into what it takes to actually set up a range? What's involved?
A guy at work and I were talking today about how it's annoying trying to find a pistol range that allows centre fire, and doesn't cost ridiculous money to join, and we started to wonder if he could build his own on his farm's property somewhere.
I know that the main cost is insurance, and that's why all the centre fire ranges cost so much to join, but what else is involved? I'm thinking of calling the CFC to see if they know, but thought I would start here first.

Thanks in advance!

CFC Range Guidelines

Contact your provincial CFO. They should be able to send you a free copy of the Canadian Firearms Centre Range Design and Construction Guidelines.

I think that maybe what AB uses. All I know is that ON is switching to it.

If it were me, I would review this doc and then contact the CFO again to discuss you project. That is if the guidelines don't scare you off. My review shows that DEEP pockets are needed to completely comply with guidelines but every range situation is different

If its a farm, and its safe, and neighbors don't care, and its just for occasional use of you and your friends (as opposed to a club or commercial) then you have a choice of i) call the CFO and spend the next 18 months and $$$$$ finding out that it is impossible to please everyone or ii) get an ATT to take your guns to the farm as a secondary residence and have fun. Its legal if your shooting from the "curtilage of the residence" - lots of threads here about the legal nuances .....but your on a farm in Alberta .....I mean c'mon.......who is going to care if you are popping off a handgun as opposed to a rifle?

Happy neighbors = no problems. Difficult neighbors - well you would never of gotten the range approved over their objection anyways.

And, if you don't get a prompt and satisfactory reception from your CFO, don't hesitate to write to (and request the assistance of) your (provincial) Minister of Justice.

I don't doubt for one minute it will cost too much to do it, but my friend asked me the question and I wanted to get him some clear answers just to satisfy his curiosity.
That idea of making his farm a place to shoot would be nice, but I kinda doubt it would fly since CFO would probably think we would be hunting there with them instead of target shooting (and the temptation would probably be too much to resist too!).
Thanks all for the ideas, btw.
