So, what do all you 'yote, fox, wolf, etc. hunters use to sew up the bullet holes in the pelts? I have heard of people using everything from sinew to dental floss, and wanted to get your opinions on what you find works best.

I just use good regular sewing thread. I havent seen the need for anything heavier.

I use a waxed string made for taxidermists. Holds tight and is rugged enough to hod up to the washing, tumbling, drying and combing I put my pelts through.

Thanks for the info guys. I use sewing thread too, but was wondering if there was something better. I had heard waxed dental floss worked good...which I'd imagine is similar the taxidermists string you were talking about sjemac. I might give a go with the dental floss next time. :D

I watched a elderly lady sewing up the leg holes on a freshly stretched beaver pelt a few years ago . She would insert the needle from the flesh side exit the needle from the edge of the skin(halfway down the thickness of the skin). When she finished sewing you could not tell where the seam was ....from the fur side of the pelt .What a beautiful job she did .

I use upholstery thread as well, but I don't do the wax thing. I used to buy and sell fur and I found it to be the best thing I had come across.
