Some of the retailers selling the famae sg542 I've noticed have options for calibre .223/.308

I thought this rifle came in .308 only. Or is the .223 a restricted pdw?

If its non restricted, what's the difference in quality and reliablility. I've hated the price of this rifle. But I feel the need to spend some money.

They are different rifles; the 5.56mm version is not a converted 7.62 mm version. It's a similar design but generally smaller (of course).

So the .223 version is smaller lighter non restricted version? It was meant to be calibre/rifle?

Tdod, long story.

SG540 in 5.56 is the original, non restricted.
SG543 in 5.56 is a shorter carbine, 14.3" (?) that is restricted.
SG542 is the big non restricted version in 7.62 NATO.

When it was designed in the early seventies, they thought that some countries would want to stay with the bigger 7.62mm NATO round so they came out with it in that caliber too.
I don't think there is much f a difference in weight between the two.
Reliable and fairly light for both.
