Hi all, I have a shadow 2 that I got in April / May and every once in awhile, it won’t extract a spent case and then tries to feed another round, resulting in a jam. Extractor removed and cleaned and still happens at the worst times in competition. Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen to them or a reason why it happens.

Thanks
John

Yes, by me, consistent 130 PF, also 11lb recoil spring. Only happens once every few hundred rounds, I thought it was some questionable range brass but not so. The spent case does come back about half way and then the new round jams up against it.

Knock on wood, never had that problem. Are the brass that don't eject have ripped rims from the extractor hook? Could be your extractor spring is getting worn down? Check the hook on the extractor to see if it's still sharp. Make sure it doesn't have a +ve hook angle on it or any debris or burr, if so, square it up with a file or stone. You can get extra power extractor springs.

130 pf and 11 lbs recoil spring should not be a problem john. I have 11 lbs recoil springs in mine and Chrono'ed 130.9 PF yesterday at Silverdale w/ my mixed range brass reloads and am yet to have a single problem of any sort in either of my Shadow 2s. Have also had zero issues at 126 PF reloads...except trying to take steel down at distance

Hmmm? Maybe replace the extractor and see if that's the issue?

Thanks for the replies........

"Are the brass that don't eject have ripped rims from the extractor hook?"
Brass rims not getting ripped

"Make sure it doesn't have a +ve hook angle on it or any debris or burr"
I checked the extractor when it was out and is sharp, no burrs, does have a slight angle on the sharp tip iirc, I thought it was supposed to be that way.

"..extractor replacement in need"
I may indeed end up getting a new extractor and spring but with only 2 to 3 thousand rounds or so out of it I wouldn't have expected issues this early on

"Also mark the magazine when it happens since the lips may need tweaking."
I think that I have it down to at least 1 mag, I checked the mag and it seems ok however I did notice on a couple of them that when I remove the rounds by hand, after the a few are remove the next one seems to have the nose of the bullet pointing downwards in the mag. I'm not sure if that is normal or not.

Bigi....as for the feed lips, what sort of tweeking would they need and what would the reason be for?

Thanks

Pretty standard stuff for a CZ. Most competitors carry 2 spare parts with them all the time. A slide stop and an extractor. I know people who have an extractor that they keep just for matches. If this problem only started recently, the extractor is starting to wear out or the groove that it runs in is dirty.

I have the same problem but much worse, probably 3 FTE in a 10 round mag. Haven't done any trouble shooting yet. I was running reloads and I am going to try some factory ammo next range trip.

When you load the mags do you tap the back of it once done to make sure all the rounds are at the back of the mag? I've owned the Shadow and the Shadow 2 and anytime I've had the issue you describe it was due to not seating the rounds properly.

That has to be my biggest fear. Extractor issues that require me to remove my dot and then hope the RDS rezeros. During a match at least.

OP do you clean behind the extractor and breech face? Tons of carbon builds up there. I scrape with screwdriver when cleaning due to RDS. Lol

Yes I did after the first few times it happened, then it happened again after a few hundred rounds. Cleaned it out again and the same thing. Does anyone know if the stock extractor that comes with it should have a slight angle on the tip? I see that there are 2 types, one with 1 dot and another with 3 dots on the extractor.

Here's mine... I should really clean that.

Thanks for the pic, mine looks like that too. After taking it out again and checking it with a magnifying glass, it doesn't look bent and has the 3 dots on it. Looks like I'm going to have to try a new one I guess. It also really only picks up the round on the corner, not the full length of the metal if that makes sense.

I have shot all sorts of dirty brass through 2 different shadows and this never happened.

I guess as already recommended, you should replace the extractor and spring (spring just in case).

check your extractor and extractor spring, it's possible they are messed up.
As for it being common for CZ shooters to have a spare extractor, um, yeah it's common for all serious competitors to have that and more. But ever since the 3 dot extractor and newer versions came out, the extractor breaking issue has vanished. that's not to say this guy doesn't have a freak broken one though. outside of when I blew a gun up, I haven't replaced an extractor in any of my guns in hundreds of thousands of rounds. Robin Sebo's gun is at 40,000+ rounds and no new extractor yet, Maria's previous gun same round count, my current match gun is 14,000 rounds or so in, and my backup gun is 30,000 rounds in, no extractors needed yet
