Just got home and cleaned up from taking the Tactical (Dynamic) Pistol 1 course that Shadow Force puts on through the Calgary Shooting Center. I have to admit that I'm a newbie when it comes to pistols still, but I learnt a ton of info and some really great skills. I also learnt that what I thought was a flinch isn't, and it's me anticipating the shot (which I'll be working on as much as I can make it to the range). I was the only person shooting .40sS&W, with almost everyone else shooting 9mm...we started with only 2 Glocks in the class, but wound up with 4 by the end of the class. A few people shooting 1911's and a couple CZ's.

Special thanks to Carl, Chad, and Dustin for their time, knowledge, and instruction. The knowledge and skills along with great attitudes (and sometimes a sense of humor) made for a learning experience that I'm thankful for taking. Safety is, of course, paramount in the course and this is stressed throughout. Learning opportunities were presented (and some showed themselves) and everyone was given the opportunity to work through it.

I look forward to taking forward the lessons taught in the last two days, and hope that I can spend more time taking courses and learning (and shooting) as much as I can. Cheers!

Scott

Just to add to Scott's review, I also finished the course yesterday. I was the only guy from out of town and I wouldn't hesitate to make the trip again. I'm actually heading down again in 2 weeks for their Dynamic Carbine 1 course.

My own experience is I've a few thousand rounds through my Trojan 9mm with a few hours of informal defensive pistol training and of course... I watched the Magpul Handgun DVDs *ahem*

I found the class had a strong emphasis on safety which was good for a lot of new shooters or those unfamiliar with a more defensive/dynamic application for handguns. There was a bit of classroom time to start the course for all of us to familiarize ourselves with the basics, theories and safety aspect of what we were going to be practising. The class progressed at a good steady pace of material and plenty of time to absorb and practice what we learnt. Proper Draw stroke, Target Identification, Trigger Control, Engaging/Transitioning Multiple Targets, Clearing Malfunctions, etc. I don't think anyone was trying to move faster than what they were capable of and the instructors were always there to observe, correct and teach.

Talking to a few of the other students, everyone walked away happy and eager to continue their education. A few students had actually already done this course and enjoyed it so much they decided to take it again.

Like I mentioned before, they're offering a Carbine course Feb 9th, I believe, and will have their full Calender up shortly. I believe there are plans for Bank Miller to come up for a few days this summer, there's a KAPAP w/ Avi Nardia in May and I believe they're trying to organize a knife fighting course as well. Also if there's enough interest in Edmonton and a facility available, they'd be interested in coming up and setting up some training for us here.

You should be able to find relevant info through Google and they have a Facebook Group as well.

Thanks, Scott, for posting first and of course to our instructors, Carl, Chad and Dustin. I look forward to joining you guys for Carbine 1 in a few weeks!
