Does Ruger use a tapered thread on their barrel shanks?
I have had a skinny little ruger take-off barrel in 223 laying around for a couple years now, and I came up with this brain-fart of putting it on a Carcano action that has also been laying around gathering dust, and reaming it up to 22-250.
I know this sounds like a waste of time and probably money, too, but I wanna try anyways.

The thing is, I can poke the barrel shank about two threads into the action and then I have to start turning it to move it in, but by the time the shoulder of the barrel is up against the action it seems to fit really solidly.

Also, does nyone know much about this particular action, that they would like to share?

No modern firearms use a taper thread that I am aware of... I know nothing about Carcanos...

Mis matched threads will sometimes start to thread together and eventually don't mesh and it will feel like it could be a tapered thread... but I am sure it isn't...

actualy there was an Italian rifle with a tapered barrel thread. It was in a Frank DeHaas book I used to have...can't remember if it was a Carcano or what.

He shows the Danish Krag as tapered in his 3rd edition book.

Its likely your Ruger @ .998" 16tpi ? will thread in you Italian Carcano of 1.065" 14tpi ? until the threads bind.

I don't know if the Carcano action would handle the pressure of 22-250??

Thanks for that info there. It looks like a hefty action, but I guess looks can be deceiving. I guess I will leave that barrel sitting in the corner for a bit yet, maybe I will run into another action sometime in the future. Gonna try and make it to the gun show in Dugald next week, maybe something there will catch my eye.

It's very possible although it turns fairly easily until the shoulder of the shanks contacts the receiver face. I am not sure about the threads on the action, but that might be pretty close to right. I am assuming you got that from a credible source.

Its in the Frank DeHass book Rembo mentioned. The reason I put ? in there was because I don't personally know and I would rather someone not take it as hard fact.

Cheers
