No, I'd say it worked perfectly, have you heard any complaints of people not being able to get in because it filled in 5 minutes? Nobody has been signing themselves and 8 of their friends up on spec and not really planning on going?
It's been advertised in the IPSC website calendar for quite awhile now, no secret that we were having a match. We've filled a good chunk of the match and so far everyone that wants to shoot it has got in. Like I said on the IPSC Ontario forum, this will probably be how we do all our matches from now on.

Sorry to break the news for you, Pat, but most of the people don't visit IPSC Ontario site for matches or even CGN, so only people on the IPSC Ontario forum been tipped off about the match and those are the people who called. I believe the secrecy helped you not to get swamped by phone calls, but I don't think it was fair to all the Ontario members who for the most part relied to a commonly used signup system.

The answer is really very simple and is being used even as I type. Post the match on the IPSC Online Match Signup site with instructions to phone and never actually open the match on the site. ;)

The match was posted on the website calendar and contact info (email) is listed under the club page under "links" and contact info for the club rep is also listed in Sitrep, there was lots of opportunity to find out about it and get signed up. The only ones who are left out are the ones that use the online match sign up exclusively and don't go to the official IPSC Ontario webpage. The only thing we could do different is add the contact info to the calendar posting, wanna add that for us?
I suspect some thought we'd cave in and post it on the online sign up, but since it has been so successful in avoiding the issues typically associated with that, it's not going to happen.

I know, bit it hasn't been done for this match, and that put some people got an advantage, which is not any more fair to people. Basically you've tried to address one issue with signup, but introduced another one and haven't even filled the match. :)

Everyone has access to the website and Sitrep so there was lots of advanced notice.

We don't really need to, we have a perfectly usable calendar on the IPSC Ontario website.

and haven't even filled the match. :)

You say that like it's a bad thing, people can still sign up, it hasn't been filled in seconds and people who really want to shoot aren't having to go on a waiting list.
You're looking at it like it's a business and the success or failure is based on how many show up to shoot. I see the quality of the match based on whether or not those that shoot it have a good time. If they enjoy themselves, they'll be back and bring friends. If they don't then we'll have to see what they didn't like and make changes.

But it is not a good thing. The match became sort of a private club match, people who didn't know about it, e.g. those who don't regularly check the IPSC Ontario web site didn't get a chance to select time, etc.

It's posted on the calendar, how is that "private"
If people can use the online sign up, surely they can navigate our home page. As I said the match is well subscribed and no one has had trouble getting in, I don't see the issue.

No this time it didn't favor the technology buffs, but somehow even you managed to get signed up, and I'm pretty sure you were on of the first...
The biggest complaint we keep getting is that people can't get signed up, this hasn't happened, if people don't use the official website that is available to EVERYONE and didnt find out about it in time, then maybe we can get them to start. Since the website is your domain so to speak, I thought you'd see this as a positive.

Pat, let me tell this to you again. We can't force people to go to the web site. Not before they know that they have to do that anyways. Most of the humans are used to certain habits.

Maybe you are not looking at the right direction. :)

Lol...since you are really the only one that has complained about it either here or in the IPSC Ontario forum, and everyone else has been positive about it, perhaps we are moving in the right direction...you just need to follow along..
