I recently bought a Turkish Mauser that came w/ a sporter stock and has a generic butt pad fastened on the rear. It's a little too large (as you can see in the pic), just wondering what is the best method of taking the excess rubber down?

Thanks!

Having never done it... if I were going to attempt it:

1. I'd put lots of masking tape on the wood next to the pad - being very generous.

2. I'd then lay down a couple layers of duct tape (to act as a mask for the next step).

3. I'd then get a little handheld sander (i.e. blakc and decker 'mouse' or similar) and sand it down to form the same shape as the stock; once you have the shape you want, switch to a finer sandpaper and you are done. (careful not to go through tape and hit the wood).

...that's how I'd do it anyway.

Best to mount the belt sander on a bench or frame, such that the belt is vertical - like a grinding wheel. This allows you to see better and more precisely grind the pad.

When I did mine I scribed the rear hard face of the butt pad with an awl then removed it and used a belt sander to take it down close to the line.
Test fit it and make any adjustments needed.Remember it`s alot easier to take it off then it is to try and put it back so go slow.
Mine fit very well.I have a table top belt sander but if using a regular hand held then do what cosmic suggests and clamp it down.

Palm sander , the mouse its called , at CT, USE THE 60 GRIT RED PAPER, AND 220 for finishng up. Let the mouse do the work , ie not aloth of pressure. It works like a charm, keep the lines flowing , ie wood and pad look like the same plane, not a dog leg which looks aweful...
