I went shooting today, took along my 627 and a box of Remington UMC .38 +P. Shot one cylinder, reloaded, shot 4 more rounds and cylinder latch falls on shooting bench, screw is sheared off. *sigh*

Shot the remaining two rounds, can't open cylinder to remove brass. Going to have to try carefully drilling that stub and using extractor to remove it. Anybody know where I can get a stainless replacement, or have one they could sell me?

Has this happened to any of you? There are obvious signs of metal fatigue, seems pretty shoddy on S&W's part.

Sonofa#####. And I really like that gun. If anyone has a better option to repair, I'm open to suggestions too.

What you suggested is the only right way to fix it.

I'm not sure who is specifically a S&W distributor or warranty center but it shouldn't be difficult to find out. Otherwise, any decent shop with a real gunsmith shouldn't have trouble getting parts.

If you aren't well setup with the right drills and a very ridgid drill press or milling machine you might want to let a shop or machinist do it.

I can't remember, and I may be wrong, but isn't that threaded portion part of the bolt? And it's just capped? Regardless, you should be able to manipulate it enough to open the cylinder. If so, take it apart and just replace the threaded bolt or bolt and screw, depending on which version of the bolt is in that revolver.

May I suggest you get a suitable LEFT hand drill to spin the stub out, if you have a rigid setup?

If not doing it that way, you would be wise to take the internal parts out of the frame to do the work. Use (only) a perfect fit screwdriver to take the frame cover plate off...

Sadly I can't suggest where to get new latch screw from a source in this God forsaken country.

So it isn't capped? Because if it is there's nothing to remove. Again, either way, I wouldn't bother "fixing" anything, I would just replace the parts.

Anywho, here's a thread I started when I was looking for some parts, it may help.

I'm a little slow. Finally figured out it is a cap, nothing to drill or extract. Thanks for info. A member reached out and has the part I need. I love CGN!

I am not a real fan of stainless, but that just me,
I am wondering if it was overtighten and that cracked the stud and it finally gave up and snapped off

The threaded post looks a little rusted near the base. Also, it's a little weird that the bolt is completely polished ("normal" bolt pictured below). I know there would be some rubbing over the years but there's no black whatsoever. Even the threaded portion that sheared off still shows some of the black finish. I'm not sure if S&W ever used polished bolts. Maybe someone with more experience can comments.
