I picked up a brass shell casing at the scrap yard today, the markings on the bottom are 3 in. MK 7 (anchor ) 1955 primer=50 cal.MK42.........It is just shy of 23 inches long and weighs 6.7 pounds. Any one know what kind of gun this would be used in,the anchor stamped on it would indicate naval...any ideas????????

NavyShooter thanks for the links, very helpful. The pix show a long projectile which I can make out wood or maybe aluminum and add this to my fledgling collection...............:D

That was a great post NavyShooter. Great info! I have one of those empty 3" cases from the Haida. My Dad served on it for quite a while in the Korean war era. If you can't figure out how to post pics Skinny, I can snap some pics of mine and post them. I had him up to Hamilton 2 years ago and Parks Canada arranged a private tour of the ship during the off season. It was unbelievable. They have done an awesome job restoring the ship.

3" Shell casing

About two months ago, I was on the Trans Canada Highway east of Virden, Manitoba. Heading east, was a semi-truck with a flatbed trailer.

The load on the trailer was a 3"/50 Mark 33 Gun Turret, with both guns mounted. similar to the turret as on NIPIGON. I am not sure where it was headed, but I think it was going to the Candian War Museum. There was a picture and article in the Virden Empire-Advance newspaper about it, as the driver had apparently stopped for lunch in Virden.

Great links NavyShooter. I think there is a twin mount 3' guns in the Calgary Military Museum. The Naval section is very impressive I enjoyed going to it last year.
Are there any 57mm Naval shell casings around?
I have 3' casings 105 Tank, 105 Artillery, 105 or 106 Recoiless, 122 Russian, 75mm, 40mms, 37mm, 30mm, 20mm, 50 Spotting, 50BMG, plus a number of them I haven't identified.
I am looking for cases for the 88mm, 57mm Naval, 17 pdr, and a 25 pdr.
I am interested in the cases not the projectiles unless they are solid shot.
Also looking for identification books or a source of light and heavy artillery shells.

Skinny, you need to use a free image hosting site( I use picturetrail) and get your pics uploaded to an album on that and then paste in the URL for the photo you wish to show, in your post on here. Here's 2 pics of my Dad by the 3 inchers on the Haida snapped 2 years ago. It was 53 years since he last set foot on the ship.

Great pics Goldidig was your Dad working on these guns when at sea??? Pretty complex looking machine,on one of Navyshooters links it said that there was a crew of 15 to run one of these things. I think I have the photo thing under control now so will take some pics.
I wonder what they did with the spent casings, throw them overboard or lug them around and recycle them when they got to port????
I bought a few 20mm cannon cases at a scrap yard a few years ago but haven't seen any for a long time......

Thanks Steppenwolf. I passed it along to him. Guys, My Dad was a radio communications technician On the Haida as well as the ships barber. I hear lots of stories about that ship! He loved serving on the Haida. He worked on all the radars and radios etc.. I just phoned Dad and he says he thinks they stowed the 3" empties away somewhere. He doesn't remember them ever throwing them overboard. He really couldn't remember for sure but given the amount of brass we're talking about, I am sure they were recycled as a rule. I do know that Dad said the gunnery accuracy was simply phenomenal on the Haida. The Gunnery computer is a massive chunk of metal, gears etc. I've never seen anything quite like it before. Here's a photo of the gunnery computer.

The primer looks like it is threaded in so reloading might be possible, there is not obvious deformation.........does any one know if they reload these shells?????
