Is it important that the shell holder match the brand of dies?
Like RCBS dies and RCBS shell holder, Redding shell holder and dies. ETC?

I always have, but is it necessary?

I have a set of 12 Lee shell holder that I use with all my dies, Hornady, Lyman,RCBS and of couse Lee. I just use the proper shell holder called for off the list on the back of the case. Never had any problems :)

The job of the shellholder is to hold the brass casing in the center of the ram.

Any brand shellholder will do that. I have used only Lee shellholders and do not know if they are the same height as other brands. So adjust or check your die height if changing brands of shellholder.

All my shell holders are RCBS with the exception of my 470 NE shellholder which is Redding (not everyone makes one that big). I run Hornady, RCBS, Redding and Forster dies and have never had a problem with the RCBS shell holders.

universal ,but i find that lee is some what of lesser quality

You can say that again!
The only two calibres that I have Lee shell holders for are 22 Hornet and 45-70. In each one the fit is very sloppy on the case. Neither would work for pulling bullets, as the case would just come out of the holder.

I have had to remove material in the past in order to full length size my .243 and .300. These were RCBS shell holders with redding dies.
I would think that for the FL sizing process, where you use the shellholder as a benchmark for your dies. That yes, it is important.
