OK
I have a used pro 1000. I am new to reloading. I need to change the shell plate to a # 19 for 40 cal. Well I have tried everthing to try to get that shell plate out and nada. I can remove the whole carrier and still nothing. Shouldnt the shell plate just spin off ? I followed the lee site instruction properly I thought. I cannot get the shell plate to loosen off the 1/4 shaft in the center.

I am to the point where i am going to put some heat to it to see if that helps.

help me please.

thanks Gents

for god'S SAKE DON'T PUT A TORCH TO IT- "
"USING A 1/4 INCH HEX WRENCH, TURN THE DRIVE BOLT CLOCKWISE TO THREAD IT OUT OF THE SHELLPLATE. YOU MUST HOLD THE SHELLPLATE IN PLACE WHILE DOING THIS. A 3/16S HEX WRENCH OR SMALL SCREWDRIVER THROUGH THE PLATE IN THE DEPRIMING POSITION WORKS WELL"- as a side note i put the screwdriver/3/16th hex wrench in BEFORE turning the plate at all- done it plenty of times

yep- reverse thread- turn it clockwise- actually, you should feel it "give"- and i don't use no "little " screwdriver in there ,neither- biggest thing that'll drop through the hole and anchor that plate- typically a 2 or 3 phillips- that way there's less slippage as there's no place for the plate to turn- you ARE coming at this from the shellplate up so you don't lose the ball, spring and the other goodies nestled in holes beneath the shellplate?

Well it all comes to a end the guy that had it before me must have lock tight it. The allen wrench spun around in the hole now it is rounded off and wont take a allen key now. Soooo looks like i am buying a new one. O forgot to say DAM IT.

thanks for you help tho

My suggestion to you is goto ww w.higginsonpowders.com and ask for a lee price list , they will email one in a day. Buy from them if you are buying a whole complete shell plate carrier they are only a couple of dallars over U.S. prices( so cheaper because no exchange) a set of dies took 2 weeks to me. Then if you want to make the original shell plate carrier work again, after you have removed the nut with a pair of vice grips and destroyed it order the repair parts from www.leeprecision.com they will have the little pieces anyone else may not. I bought a bunch of small parts from them and it took 2 weeks for them to arrive..

if it were me, in this situation, i'd clamp the works in a drill press and CAREFULLY drill the drive bolt out with ascending drill bits until it was too thin to hold, and collapse bolt in on itself- after locking the plate, of course- or if you can come at it from the bottom with a set of needle nose vise grips, in which case you turn counter clockwise- btw, a new drive bolt is all of 5.00 plus shipping- tr2431

just curious, what was the original cartridge set up?- pls don't tell me 9mm

ok this here is what you do now- take the carrier off your press if you haven't done so, put a substantial nut and bolt through the decapping hole and tighten it down so the shellplate wont turn- not too much as you'll warp the shellplate- then you take a 3/8ths drill to the drive bolt and go slowly through it( it's probably hardened steel) that should give you enough to weaken the sides and get it to collapse- if not go up 1 to maybe a 7/16 - i believe the hole in the shellplate is half inch, so you're safe with 3/8ths and maybe 7/16, but double check it anyway- this way you'll save your carrier- be sure and go slowly and use LOTS OF OIL

i've been doing some more thought on this and before you do anything else, put a nut and bolt through the decapping hole and take mr dremel tool and a cutting wheel and put a slot in the collar of that drive bolt- then put in a big blade screwdriver and try to turn it clockwise- you've got nothing to lose as your drive bolt is f**ed anyway

okay i have had this happen to me before .. need to learn the "you are a big guy you don't have to twist the crap outa everything tomake it tight." I actually used a pair of vice grips on the outside of it to twist it out .. The replacement drive bolts are available from Lee for 5 bucks a peice you may want to consider getting a few extra plastic bushings from inside as well i have worn a few of them out too

thanks for the ideas guys. I will give it another go. Yes i have been accused of twisting off a few bolts now and then. The shell plate that was in the press when i got it was a # 2 I believe. So that would be a 45 shell plate if i am right.

t star ill will try the cutting a slot and going at it that way as the vicegrips didnt work.

thanks again

yea, that's a 45 acp head alright-if worse comes to worse, do the drill thing i explained and that way you'll save both a carrier and a valuable shellplate- 45 being as popular as it is, i'd just re-assemble with a new drive bolt, and maybe switch it to the small primer feed if you have access to that brass- it's becoming more popular- that way when you want to switch , all you do is bump the carrier off( which has nothing to do with liquidating the mailman)
