Shell solution for a wading duck hunter

Hey everyone,

I've got a question that I hope someone can help me out with. Where I duck hunt, wading is how you set decoys, chase cripples and pick up birds. By Mid-October, I've gone to a different location where I use a canoe and just stick them in my jacket pockets. However, in the early season I'm usually just hunting in a shirt.

I've tried shell belts and once a hunt I seem to go over waist level and get my shells wet. I see lots of "handwarmers" that clip onto D-rings on waders, but my set doesn't have D-Rings on them. Sticking them in my pants pockets is just too big of a pain for me. I had a McAllister vest that was nice, but misplaced it somewhere and didn't realize how expensive they'd gotten.

So what I'm looking for is a wading vest someone can recommend in the ~$50 range. Shell loops would be nice, but just zippered pockets would work. Camo isn't even necessary as long as it is a green or brown colour.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Cory

I have one of these vests and it seems to work pretty good and is comfortable. Keeps my shells nice and dry. Made by Avery

I'd check your local dealers, I know a few here in NB who specialize in waterfowl and they carry Avery products. Unfortunately they're pretty small time and I don't know if the do much shipping of products.

Just a thought. But could you not put a gromit. (Rivet but a metal circle) in the strap of your waders and attach a d clamp ring that way? That vest seems like a good way to go though. Personally I wouldn't want 2 layers of straps over my shoulder though

Put the box of shells on a stump next to you. Put the shells in a sack and hang it on a branch next to you. Or get a little 10' flat bottom duck boat and a punt pole, and use it for the whole season. I always found cargo type pockets and clothing too bulky and uncomfortable when hunting, but each person is different.

+1 for the Avery strap vest. I hunt in waders most of the season, it gives me a place for my shells, birds in the back pouch, sunglasses, gloves, calls and face mask. As far as setting decoys I either use my kayak or wade to do it, and for retrieving shot and crippled birds I use my pudelpointer who is an excellent waterfowl dog.

I guess I could've just looked that up myself...thanks!

I overcame the same problem by wearing a neoprene shell belt inside my waders - just below my chest. It sounds uncomfortable, but try it - you might be surprised. I did recommend this to a skinny friend of mine and he said that it always slipped down to his waist and he had to go 'fishing' down the front of his waders for his shells. I'm a little better padded - lol - so the shell belt stays where there. I set my dekes, get settled, then load my gun with three and put another three in my right-hand pocket of my shirt (I shoot left). When I use those three, I replenish from the shell belt.
