My usual spring fishing trip to Sheridan Lake had to be rescheduled for the fall this year. Kicking myself as the weather was awesome and fishing was great when we were supposed to be there this spring.

Anyhow, since we rescheduled for September, I was wondering what the Grouse were like in the area, think I can hunt duck too if I can find them, anyone have anything else to add (birds only) and locations etc where, when in that area for September? Will have to check the synopsis but looking for some local advice.

Thanks!!

We hunted LEH moose in the first week of Oct last fall, just a little west of the lake. Plenty of ditch chickens, good sizes too. The 10-22's got a work out that week.

There are literally hundreds of logging roads & trails in the Interlakes area. Grouse - Ruffed and Spruce - should not be hard to find.

There is also very good duck & goose hunting in the area but it takes a fair bit of scouting to find the honey-holes.

With that said the September rainbows in Sheridan will probably keep you so busy that hunting may not be an option. ;)

Figure that, are there any locals that know the area specifically? I remember there is a board member or two that are members at the Lone Butte club?

my family has had a cabin on sheridan since 83 so i consider myself a bit of a local (i was born in 81). i did a bit of scouting while i was up in may, and your best bet for birds is walking the trails. grab a map and head in a direction. there are a lot of little lakes and swamps in the area for ducks also. i don't know if you'll be able to shoot ducks on sheridan cause most of the shore is lined with cabins (plus i don't know how people would take someone shooting into a fishing lake where boats might be). lots of places in the back 40 though.

getting to be busy in the fall, lots of hunters traveling from the island, coast etc, doesnt make for good hunting my father operated fish camps in the area years ago when acsess was a dirt road i hunted there lots in the past but not lately to many visitors,, wade

I lived in that area for quite a while. As others have stated there are a lot of hunters from the coast in the fall. I used to hunt deer and moose on the Spanish creek rd, North of Canim lake. I had no problem shooting loads of rabbits, blue, spruce and ruffed grouse on the logging roads.

I lived in 100 Mile for many years and I can attest that there is usually a good chicken population there in the fall. Lots of backroads to walk. I always found somewhere to go even if I had to ask to cross private property. Good luck

Plenty of grouse here, ruffed and spruce as mentioned above. Those are the only birds I hunt so I can't help much beyond that. There are plenty of ducks around, I just dont' know the areas to hunt them.

Pick up a backroad mapbook to give you an idea of what is available, and the Sheridan-Interlakes skidoo/quad club has hundreds of miles of trails in addition to that.

Your best bet would be to pm boonerbuck as he is a goldmine of info on hunting and fishing this area. The number of "off the main track" lakes he's fished in just one season is astounding, and he's a very avid hunter as well.

He's just moved up to Quesnel this spring but still has a cabin in the area. He's always willing to help a fellow hunter have a successful hunt. :)

dont be fooled , this is not a very big area, and the untouched areas dont exist any more, more new cabins and roads, i like everyone to get a good outdoor experience when they plan their hunts, there are fish guides working most of the lakes in the area and lots of transient hunters in the fall, i would plan to go somewhere else if i was you, but to each his own,, my two cents worth anyway,, wade

I don't need to hunt near the lake, we have driven up some of the forestry north of Hwy 24. Just wondering if someone knows the area well enough to say, head north on the forestry road near blah blah blah a good area for grouse etc etc. That way I don't need to waste time in an area without any game etc, not like I will be spending a month or two there killing everything around me..hehehe just wanted to fill some time between hours on the lake, hunt for an afternoon etc, now we fish, head to the hills and shoot and drink, thought maybe if we are gonna shoot some guns, maybe we can incorporate a hunt in there for an afternoon....
