Does anyone know if Shilen barrels are button rifled or cut. A gunsmith mention if it were buttoned then recontouring the barrel could re-stress the barrel and screw it up.

Thoughts guys??

they are button rifled, and the SS ones are hand lapped

they are also fully stress releived, and will recontour with no problem, if the gunsmith knows what he is doing

Back about 1967 I used my first Shilen barrel and then in 1970 I started using a lot of Shilen barrels. Now hundreds to date. I have turned them down to much lighter contours and they have stayed straight as can be and shot well (Hunting rifles) I have also turned heavy benchrest barrels slightly with no accuracy loss. His stress relieving is done well. I have turned other makes where the stress relieving was not done well and the blank warped terribly and ended up destroyed.

Well it is recontoured and rechambered, looks great. Now just have to wait on the seating die to get back from Redding and see how it shoots.

I have used a few. They are okay... no big deal.

Today we are fortunate in having so many excellent barrel makers. What is the best for one shooting discipline is not always the best for another.
