I need to build up my shim (brass or stainless is fine) stock collection after hosting 4 recent (in the past year) M14 clinics. I went to Home Depot, but they looked at me real funny. Must have been my haircut.

For those M14 newbies: The shim stock us used to pound out tiny thin washer-like shims to fit in between the shoulder of the barrel and the gas cylinder assembly. This reduces the tendency of the gas cylinder parts/assembly to vibrate robbing you of your consistency from shot to shot, and hence opening up your groups. Wow, that was a mouthful. :D You will carry out this modification when you attend my M14 clinic or merely bring your M14 to the gunsmith, and they will say, "WTF are you talking about?" or some will say, "Just download the 2004 M14 Abbotsford Clinic and carry this out for yourself." Those are the 'smiths that want to empower (not by extensior cord) YOU to tweak your own M14. :D

You machinist or tool and die types got any suggestions ? Princess Auto ?

I did check out the local RONA and Ukrainian Tire with negative results. :(

I've got to get ready for the Sudbury Clinic coming up in 20 Sep 2008.

Cheers,
Barney

We went through at least 4 sheets of 5 thou, 8 thou, 10 thou and another 5 thou over the 4 or 5 clinics I ran last year. Lost count already, that's how many I've done.

I'll try the Auto Parts store here town (UAP).... another CGNutter said that he got some at Lee Valley, but that will have to be a weekend proposition.

Peace be to journey,
Barney

I have a roll of one hundred inches by six inches of brass shim stock that I can bring to the Sudbury clinic.

Hungry here: Yeah, let's do that. That way, you CGNutters can hammer out your own shims... great karma, slug!

May be worth looking in the yellow pages for an industrial supplier who deals with tool & die or machine shops; or a tool & die shop may tell you where they get their shim stock from.

any industrial supply place should be able to get you some. Try places like Fastenall, Brafasco, Canadian Bearings. You can order kits with different sizes in it from McMastercarr for a decent price.

powmia56: Nice that a group buy can be made. Understand that my intention is to have you clinic goers make your own shims with my tools (thanks to cockedandlocked) since that's a lot more fun.

OTOH, buying your own shims makes sense if it's too hard to coordinate a clinic in yer area. I understand.

Peace out.
Barney

Acklands-Grangier used to carry bearing brass shim stock packs.

Or, your local hobby shop that carries high-end brass model railroad equipment will have a whole selection of brass in sheets of various thicknesses, rod-sections, tube-sections, etc.
