Shimming Dovetail Mounted Scope

Hi there. So, I am awaiting the arrival of a riflescope for my rimfire rifle. I am anticipating it needing to be dialed in. It is used, so I planned on centering it by counting thr turns then setting it in the middle. Now here is where teh question comes. I understand if I can use Weaver mounts, I can easily shim the mounts. But as this is a dovetail mount, how or where does one best shim the scope. I may have another question or two along the way, but I will wait till then to ask. Thank you.

Use a mirror to set the natural zero. Works perfectly. Why do you need to shim it?

I'll have to read up on using a mirror to set natural zero. I am hoping to not have to shim it, but just wanting to have some adjustment left after zeroing, by keeping ice close to centered, should it require a lot of adjustment to one direction. Thank you.

Mount it. Shoot it and zero. See how much adjustment is left. Decide if you need to do anything.
