Went to mount a 42 m\m scope on a 77 Ruger with standard rings. The objective end just kissed the barrel with scope pushed all the way forward.
I gathered up some shim stock and placed same between ring base and the receiver. I used .030 stock to get the clearence I needed but continued to play with some .045 stock. The .045 is probably about the limit for this trick.
The mounting seems solid and stable, however if the scope falls off after the first round is fired, I'll let you know....

Good Shooting

M 77 Rings

These rings are designed with a male dovetail that match female dovetails in the receiver. By placing a shim between rings and receiver nothing has changed except a slight loss of contact in the dovetail system. Higher rings would be the obvious solution, but in this case the .030 shims provided daylight between barrel and the objective end of the scope. If one were to do only the front ring you would risk scope damage. I did not want to go with higher rings because I only needed .030 to clear. The higher rings would have raised the scope .375...

Good Shooting

After shimming the ring base I would have lapped the rings to make the inner surfaces parallel to each other... otherwise you may get some scope tube marks and a bit of stress on the scope...

Dennis, that is an excellent tip!
