Any ideas on how to shim an SVT-40 in its stock? I have gone the route of using a brass shim behind the action to force the action against the stock. I am having second thoughys as this is actually pushing the action forward away from the recoil bolt. Any suggestions?

I tried it also and found it to be a dead end unless you want to drill and tap some holes for action screws. Either way I don't think anything other then hand loads will noticeably increase accuracy.

Well, I don't really want to increase accuracy as much as I just want to keep the action from moving. As long as what i have done has no ill-effects, than I am cool with it ;)

Your shim is correctly placed and a snug fit at the rear of the action is desirable. Did you happen to notice the receiver sits behind the bolt? If you can manage to tighten up the lateral fit of the receiver to the stock, so much the better.

No I didn't notice that (it's been months since I had the action completely out). I had to lightly tap the shim in so it is snug now. I also used card stock my wife had to alleviate the side to side play. The fit is snug now.

Then you have done all you can do to make it better short of making a new stock. A thicker stock & barrel would really wake things up!

I shot the rifle yesterday. I only got to shoot 5 rds due to the weather but the rifle put them in a nice little 3 inch group. Considering I was sitting rice-paddy prone I was super impressed. Also my mag from Westrifle that I fitted as a spare works good. I will need some more time with it to be sure it works flawless.

I did indeed shim the action laterally as well with brass shims made from empty brass.
Obligatory pic.
