I have a old boat paddle stock 77 with the shiny stainless finish. The rifle has been with me thru thick and thin for a long time and was my only hunting rig for years, but my choice of silver Leupold and the sheen always picked me, that it is a true clover leaf gun always got me over it tho.....

Now that it is not my only choice to hunt with and my other Rugers have that nice satin grey stainless I would like to try and rectify the situation. I would like to tinker at home as I have a Timmney trigger to put in... I thought about the paint route but will emery cloth, a flapper wheel and dremel take the shine away? Good thing I'm at work so I can ask first and not be at home with a couple beer in me, the rifle in a vise breaking out the power tools ;)
I have a matte black scope enroute to replace the VII and I would like it to look sharp not a fudd job..... Suggestions? Besides send it away for cerakote....

Thanks,
DK

yea the options you listed will take the shine away, but also look like #### as you will have esentially scratches making it dull. if you have any place near you that can beadblast that would be one of the nicer options for a dull stainless finish

I've done several of those 77's with glass beads and they look great, now mind you they won't look exactly like the new Ruger's matte stainless finish as they use some kind of chemical etch or pickling too.

120 or higher grit glass bead and you'll love it. Never ever with a dremel. More good guns have died to that thing than any gun control measure ever.

Birchwood Casey makes SS blackener, if that'd be considered. Goes on just like cold bluing. No idea how well it works though. As mentioned, no beer(only 2 to make you do silly things? Geezuz.) and no rotary tools.
Emery cloth and wheels would take eons to do it.

What about this? No experience but looks like it should work

Intriguing to be sure but the bead blasting made me remember my ceramic coating guy for my bikes headers.... He does bead blasting and lots of it, off it goes to him as soon as I get home on Friday!! I'll post before and after.
