I have some questions for those of you who have sold and shipped pistols from EE transactions. I am aware of the regulations Canada Post puts on shipping firearms but I wanted to specifically know what kind of locking devices you have been using on the firearm and the case.

I find that some of my pistol cases don't have enough depth to accommodate a standard trigger lock without bursting at the seams. In that scenario are people using cable locks that go through the ejection port and magazine well? Do you lock the slide all the way to the rear or let it come forward and rest against the cable lock? Does anyone remove the slide all together?

Keyed locks would obviously not be too practical so any recommendations on cheap combo locks that are good enough to secure the gun and the case?

If you have to buy locks specifically to ship a pistol do you include that cost in the shipping you charge to the buyer or do you let it slide?

I am curious to hear what guys are doing to stay within the regs.

Use those cheap little plastic trigger locks. Then zip tie the case. I wouldn't charge the buyer for one of the plastic ones, but would for other more expensive ones and cable locks, though that's generally already factored into my asking price, if so.

Most guns I get from retailers ship with a plastic Ty-Wrap around the trigger, and also used on the locking tabs on the case.

That's the cheapest secure option available. But you run the risk of your buyer being a dummy and scratching the case/trigger/frame if they don't know how to use a set of wire cutters, or aren't strong enough to snip through them with scissors.

This. I get a 4 pack of these at my LGS for about 6 bucks and there great. Just tape the flat key on an obscure place in the box and advise the buyer where it’s at.

I have never seen those plastic trigger locks before, I will keep my eyes open for them. Thank you for your responses!

The brand name for them I get at SFRC is Parkland and I recently got some from Williams Arms in Port Perry and they were a different brand name. Both sets were black. I’ve not seen the red ones before.

I have never seen those plastic trigger locks before...

I've never actually seen them for sale myself, but I keep acquiring them somehow...

If you're worried about "security" during delivery, you can always mail the key separately by lettermail.

These are what I use too. I call them $1 trigger locks, but that's a dated term now. I use there because they are cheap and easy and meet the definition of a secure locking device, which I don't believe a zip tie does. CP says attach a secure locking device, so I do. I even send the key taped to a piece of cardboard in an envelope separately via letter mail. I use combination cable luggage lock on the case, Amazon cheapies I got for $4 each. The verbiage is different for a locked case, so a zip tie may meet that requirement, but $4 isn't enough to worry about.

I list guns with shipping signature, age ID, tracking and locks all factored in. $7 for locks is virtual peanuts in the overall deal, and could save big hassles if things go bad. There are stories on here of guns being stopped 2,000 kms from the shipper and Canada Post refusing to do anything other than have the shipper come pick it up. Seven dollars on locks, or $1500 in gas and hotels to drive across the country and pick-up poorly packaged gun, is the cheapest insurance I've ever bought.

I don't care what others do, I don't care what businesses do.
