So I ordered some powder from Cabela’s the other day during one of they’re sales and just received an email and was informed on top of the shipping I already payed it was going to cost an additional $122.50 to ship the 2 pounds of powder. Does this not seem more than a little pricey?

The only way to order powder from them is to pick it up in store. Lots of reports of ridiculous shipping. I thought it would fall under the same guidelines of ammo, which ships free usually.

Higginson charges a $30 hazmat fee and shipping isn't free unless you buy a lifetime supply of powder, lol. Their prices aren't even that good anymore. As VinnyQC points out there are retailers out there that ship powder for free with a minimum order which can include other needed items.

I do buy a lot of powder from Bass Pro but I buy it in-store and always get it price matched.

western metal has the best prices on powders, free shipping, and no need for ridiculous amount of powder like some other place.

Western metal doesn't ship free, you have to purchase $300 worth, as for price their Varget for example is $11.50 /lb more than Higginson, and their selection isn't very good.

XReload has always worked for me. Good prices and very reasonable shipping - like 10% of the order cost give or take.

Gotta watch for deals. I just bought 8 lbs of imr 7828 from Canada ammo for $229 shipped. Budget shooter supply has the best shipping rate I’ve ever seen. Xreload is 10% to ship usually. They have a huge selection and decent prices. When you do find it, stock up. It’s cheaper to ship 8lbs once than it is to ship 2lbs four times.

Keep in mind (http://gazette.gc.ca/rp-pr/p2/2013/2013-12-18/html/sor-dors211-eng.php):

Detached dwellings
301. The maximum quantity of propellant powder that may be stored at any one time in a detached dwelling, or in a storage unit attached to a detached dwelling, is 25 kg of which no more than 10 kg may be black powder.

Other dwellings — smokeless powder
302. (1) The maximum quantity of smokeless powder that may be stored at any one time in a dwelling other than a detached dwelling, or in a storage unit attached to a dwelling other than a detached dwelling, is

(a) 20 kg, if all the smokeless powder is in containers that hold no more than 1 kg; or
(b) 5 kg, if any of the smokeless powder is in a container that holds more than 1 kg.

So, basically, even if Higginson sent the powder in 24x1lb containers we couldn't keep 2 shipments of powders from Higginson in a non-detached dwelling.

That being said, with 24lbs of titegroup I can make over 40,000 cartridges. That's a lifetime supply for a lot of shooters. And that's about 800lbs of ammos to store somewhere. Not only that, if I just want to try a new powder for a cartridge, ordering a single pound from Higginson if out of question.

I'll stick to xreload, western metal, canam's D4064 (if they bring it back), and Henry's. Plus my LGS when they go on sale.

Some who only buy in bulk once a year have storage units for that reason. Common down east where we have no immediate supply of powder at our doorstep

A person may acquire and store up to 75 kilograms gross mass of smokeless powder for use in a storage unit.

Cheers

Smokeless powder and complete cartridges are two separate DG classes: 1.4S and 1.3C, respectively. From what I remember, shipping up to a specific amount of 1.4S materials without the typical TDG paperwork is possible due to a specific exemption. The paperwork is definitely required for 1.3C.

Ya, total rip off, same for me, but more......I live 45mins from Abbotsford store but thought, hey free shipping code, so why not.....got this:

Hello

Due to the dangerous nature of the powders on your order, there are additional shipping charges required. The shipping for the powders would be an additional $136.50 and would be shipped with Day & Ross as Canada Post and UPS will not handle these items. Please advise how you would like to proceed. Please contact us at 1-800-265-6245 where a customer service representative will be happy to assist you.

So that's $136.50 + the $14.95 I got "free".....same thing, 2 pounds.
