shipping rifles

New Canada Post regs are listed on their site. Make sure it's empty, trigger lock it, put it in an opaque container (box). Here's the ambiguous part.....CP says container must be locked. Some folks are shipping in rifle hard cases while most are shipping in extremely well taped boxes. I ship in a box that is taped heavily. New regs dictate that you MUST open a Solutions for small Business account with CP wherein you can weigh the parcel and print off the label and just drop off at post office. Signature is required and with the account you get free expedited shipping and $100 basic insurance.

+1 for what handofzeus said. I do not think a cardboard box would qualify as "locked" if a checker wanted to be picky, but having said that, I don't know how often they check. I'm cautious, so I usually ship in a locked hard case, but I know others who don't.

There are many cheap trigger locks available that I wouldn't trust for normal use, but they're great for shipping. Stuff like this, around $2 each:

I have been able to buy (relatively) cheap hard cases from Cabela's for around $50, although you may be able to find something cheaper elsewhere if you look. I usually use a luggage lock to lock the case, since they are cheap and available. The case typically has a hole for this type of lock.

I purchased 4 new rifles in the past 8 weeks, all from different CGN site sponsors, all using CanPost. They were all shipped in their original factory cardboard boxes, no locks on any of them. The two bolt actions did have their bolts removed.

I have shipped 2 rifles this month with my CanPost business account. I won't describe in detail how I packaged and shipped them, but monkey see, monkey do.

From the C.P. website:
When you ship firearms, you must:

Unload the firearms. There can’t be any ammunition in the firearm or in the package (bullets, cartridges, and other ammunition are dangerous goods).
Attach a secure locking device to the firearms.
Lock the firearms in a sturdy, non-transparent container.
Remove the bolt or bolt carrier from any automatic firearms (if removable).

You can’t:

Ship firearms via air
Have any markings on the outside of the firearm packaging

You’re solely responsible for meeting all government regulations.
