I can not think of a single "pro". So far as "cons" - for the seller, takes several weeks for payment to be mailed to you, if the recipient shows up. If he does not show up, at some point, the parcel is returned to you, and you are on the hook for the postage, both ways, if you want the parcel back. For the receiver - it is "Cash On Delivery" - you do not get to inspect inside the parcel and then decide whether you are going to pay or not - you pay, first, then are handed the package. The payment is then forwarded on to the sender. The COD parcel receiver is not getting "his/her money back" from Post Office, if not satisfied with what was in the package.
So the only wild guess benefit would be for a buyer, who does not have the money now, to order the thing as COD, because he/she expects to have the money for it when it arrives?
I do not understand the significance of specific concern of shipping a "rifle"? Could be shipping a Skil Saw or a lamp shade - exact same issues.
It has been easily 40 years since I had anything to do with COD parcels - would be glad to hear what, if anything, has changed?
COD is no longer available from Canada Post as of May 2020 (Covid protocol apparently I was told, and she pulled out the memo).. has to be expedited with sig and they won't do the shipping at the post office, you need to do it online from home, then drop of the package ... which.... well, whatever.
And generally, pay before shipping is the way folks go. I had one person looking for some reassurance, and (FRAUD ALERT) offers "buyers protection", but there is a 3% premium to use (FRAUD ALERT).... I charged the buyer 3% more for that as they found that reassuring to use that service. When buying, I've never had an issue with sellers (maybe I've been lucky?) I only buy from folks with 10+ positive feedbacks on CGN or the other site.
I just use CanPar now - about 6-7 days from Ontario to BC via ground - currently - when CP is still 3-4 weeks for same service. (it was about 2 weeks in December, but now its back to the regular service level)
I had the PO print off my shipping label as the printer went haywire, I just showed handed him my card , no problem.
COD, I did one , maybe 1990 or so, All you know is you got a box, but you don't have a clue if it is a fence post or a gun.
With snap ship, you can't do one , I don't think, if you can, there are extra fees I know.
There was this question asked about 3 weeks ago, in general firearm discussions ,I think it was.
