Shoot 270 in a 280 rifle?

A buddy fired a 25-06 AI in a Rem 700 7mag and blew the extractor off the bolt, peppered his eye red with who knows what but ended up in one piece overall. My son fired a 6.5x55 in a .308 NM with no ill effects except for a sad pop instead of a bang.Had to remove some brass from the neck and chamber.

The reason the 25-06 blew up in the 7mm mag, was because the 25-06 case didn't fit the 7mm mag chamber, thus it didn't seal the gas in.
The only safe type we talked about is where the case is identical, except for a smaller calibre, like the 270 in a 30-06 or a 243 or 7mm-8 in a 308 Winchester rifle.
And with that I'm finished with this.

Noone seems to be concerned with the fact that a 270 Winchester chambered in a 280 Remington creates more than 0.040" excess headspace condition?

Ted

That explains the blowback I got in my face plus the fact that the cartridge case was not even engaged in the bolt face when I opened it. Had to use a rod to punch it out. Wife said "why is your eye red?" I explained that one of my cartridges had been "hotter" than the rest. Thank goodness for the M98 action.

For those that don't hand load, it is a well documented procedure for making cases for obscure cartridges. For example the 303Epps is made by firing a 303BR in an Epps chamber. The procedure as H4831 mentioned earlier is known as fire forming.
This is when it is done on purpose, with knowledge of what you are doing, and the correct cartridges to do the fire forming, there is little danger.

Every firearms owner should know the hazards associated with firing incorrect rounds in your rifle. It can be disastrous for your firearm, and could result in your premature demise. If you don't know, don't do it!
Showing folks how a 20ga shot shell will lodge in the bore of a 12 is standard safety course stuff. But other things can happen. Bullets can lodge in the barrel, head space can cause violent case separation. Bits of the case can break off and lodge in the barrel. The center can blowout of a bullet, leaving the rest in the chamber, neck, or bore. Pressures can just be too much resulting in Kabbom, Lots of things, boom on your next shot, or even your first. Be careful, and be knowledgeable.

I had a buddy mix in a .300 sav round in his .308, made a different sound and accuracy sucked.

I did that once with a .243 in a .308. It just went off with a mild report and mild recoil and I couldn't find a hole in the target, checked the case....OOPS!

Many years ago a friend accidently fired a 7x57 in his beautiful new deluxe Sako .270. It blew the floorplate out, completely split the stock & bowed both sides of the action out away from the magazine. burned his face, but his glasses saved his eyes. The most amazing thing to me was that as the follower was blown out it sheared about 1/2 inch off the rear of it as it was forced out. Ive never liked using loose ammo out of my pocket since that time.
