Shoot Pellet Gun In Backyard?

Check with city bylaw. providing it's under 500fps (no pal req) and backstop built to prevent ricochet you should be OK. explain that to them as well. We have a fairly large backyard in Regina and sometimes when the beers come out so does the bb gun trap and a few Umarex pistols, can competitions, makes them easier to crush :)

I think most municipalities will have a bylaw against it. I mean really, imagine it from the city's point of view. How much liability would the city have if they allowed you to shoot in your backyard.

We live in the age of litigation and it's easier to just outlaw something that can be even remotely dangerous.

Some guys on the Canadian Airgun Forum make backstops in a cardboard or wooden box with a heavy piece of fabric hanging over a supported rod. Others prefer to shoot duct seal lined containers.

Shoot in your basement and keep it low key, but if you ever have an accident you can bet you'll be hearing that the city has a bylaw against shooting pellet guns within city limits for "just this reason".

Make a good backstop, shoot safe and enjoy yourself.

yer asking for trouble. There is always the left wing dog poo eating neighbour out there somewhere.

.. The inherrant Danger, is a Neigbour making a 'phone call, "Man with a Gun" type of thing. Naturally, the attending Officers, will be keyed up, anticipating, facing a FIREARM, being wielded by a "Nut Bar" or a Drunk, and potentially, reacting precipitously. By-Laws also, probablly prohibit firing Air Guns, as also with Bows, in a Residential area. .... David K

The main issue is the neighbors...couple of years ago I shot a pellet gun during a family lunch, shot all afternoon long with my younger cousins we were in a suburb area. My grandfather always had a good relation with his neighbors so they didn't really bother. Since it only happened on this day nobody made a big deal...

You probably want to shoot in your backyard on a regular basis...wich might be problematic if you have the ''pain in the a**'' type of neighbors. If I was you, I would shoot for a couple days just to see if you have any bad feedback about it...If you don't you should be alright IMO....And even if the police shows up to tell you that it's illegal. the probably won't send the SWAT to disarm you

That's just my opinion, you should check the regulations to be sure

Well when I read the question from the original poster I thought no way can you discharge in Vancouver. Where I live in southern ON the bylaw is such that you cannot discharge any type of projectile within city limits (city of 100K)

BUT not from your way, but a couple of searches seem to show that you are in the same situation,

For your consideration - I am no expert, but if you have an internet connection you too can lookup bylaws - just saying.

I don't have all day to research, but this cursory search is a start - from the city website.

click on "can I shoot the pigeons"

Not supposed to discharge slingshots or pellet guns... look further and find the original by-law - but I would bet that it says same.

I would consider a basement or similar setup with a pellet trap as has been mentioned. It has the advantage that you can focus on your practice with no distractions. Maybe not ideal, but it has it's merits. You shouldn't have any trouble, but I would consider setting it up as you would at a licensed range - at least in terms of having a set firing line, controlling the line, etc. So long as it's safe and private and sounds reasonable you can reduce chances of hassle a lot.
