Hello,
Please include an announcement of our community event.
Step back in time to the Wild West, become a cowgirl or cowboy and learn to shoot guns of the old west in a safe environment at the Victoria Fish and Game Protective Association (VFGPA) on Saturday May 12th. Located at 700 Holker Place (turn toward the ocean off the Malahat Dr. across from Spectacle Lake turnoff).
Remember when you played cowboys and cowgirls with your friends and were always on the hunt for the bad guys? You may have been Roy Rogers, Miss Kitty, The Lone Ranger, Anne Oakley, Wyatt Erp or some other character of your own creation. If so, you have the chance to relive this fantasy.
Cowboy Action Shooting is an exciting opportunity to re-enact the escapades of your childhood. The Old West may have ceased to exist at the beginning of the 20th century but was recreated in 1986 with the invention of the sport of Cowboy Action Shooting. This is the fastest growing shooting sport in the world and is enjoyed by over 80,000 participants, both young and old.
The action is staged in a setting reminiscent of the western frontier. It is a contest of speed and accuracy where shooters are timed for 24 shots with four guns and a five second penalty is added for each missed target. The guns used in this sport consist of two single action six guns, a lever action rifle and a double barrel or Winchester ‘97 pump action shotgun. All guns were designed and used on or before 1898 or are replicas thereof. The scenarios can include ambushes on the trail, saloon fights, train robberies, jail breaks, defending your gold claim and shootouts at high noon.
There is much in the sport for all levels of competitor. For some it is collecting and shooting vintage style firearms, for others it’s the opportunity to create and wear costumes of the period. Each participant must adopt a persona appropriate to a character or profession of the period 1865 to 1898, or a Hollywood western star and develop a fitting alias and costume. Some say it is the closest you can get to the Old West without a time machine.
A fee of $30 (cash or check only) will be charged to cover the cost of ammunition and instruction from our experienced cowgirls and cowboys, and then you get a chance to try your skill at shooting western guns. Ammunition and guns will be provided. Participants do not require a firearms license. Lunch will be available to purchase.
Registration is between 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. (pre-registration recommended for this popular event). Instruction and shooting from 9 a.m. to noon, then a one stage mini match will be available to new shooters after lunch. Costumes are not required for this event, but wear a cowboy hat and boots if you have them. Receive instruction from National Champion cowgirls and cowboys and then try your skill at shooting six gun revolvers, lever action rifles, and shotguns. If you ever wanted to be a cowboy/cowgirl don’t miss this opportunity! Come experience Cowboy Action Shooting, one of the fastest growing sports in North America!
ALL ARE WELCOME: New Shooters, Visitors, Spectators, and Youngsters. Shooters must be a minimum age of twelve. A parent must accompany minors. The Victoria Frontier Shootists of VFGPA encourage you to bring along family, friends and your camera. For more information and to pre-register contact Match Director: Haweater Hal (aka Al Wilson)
