i was reading about a insert or adaptor that went into the chamber of a .303 enfield to allow it to fire 7.62x39 ammo.is there any truth to this or is it someone blowing smoke.if it is true where do i find one of these?

Some folks have been known to pull 7.62x39 rounds apart and use the powder and bullets but other than that it's not true. Other than bullet size, the two rounds are too dissimilar.

While theoretically possible to create an adapter, the .303 is a rimmed round while 7.62x39 is rimless, which means a new bolt head is needed. Enfields have been converted before but a smith must re-barrel and re-chamber as well as modify the mag, bolt, extractor. In my opinion it's not worth it, just re-load your .303 with light loads.

Look on Surplusrifle.com, there is an article about doing the conversion. A lot of Aussies had stockpiles of 7.62x39 and no semi-autos to shoot them through, hence there are a number of these conversions in Australia. Also the AIA Lee-Enfield clones are available there in that calibre.

I've got a chamber insert for 303 that has a 7.62x39 chamber reamed in it.
The insert extracts like a standard 303 cartridge and a new 7.62x39 round is reloaded into it.
One of these days I will get around to trying it out.

They work, they were tried over here when we had a .303 famine but they arent needed or seen much now as its a change to your licence here to get one!

seems some bubbas used AK mags :

They're beautiful old guns that have made it this far as good as the day they were made. Let's not change the recipe, buy something that shoot 7.62 x 39 and keep shooting your .303.

bubba's enfields aren't beautiful anymore :)
na we want something we can shoot for fun because price of X39 are really cheap

Some were done so that all you saw was a smaller round being loaded, others like the IA M10 rifles are new builds and look it although most here were built using good service rifles of which we had plenty but very little ammo in the mid 90's.
The insert was loaded with the x39 round and then chambered as if it was a .303, the Vickers guns and .22 rf trainers had these carriers for short range practice from WW1.

Then there is www.specialinterestarms.com

Unfortunately they don't export so one would need someone on this side to possibly the bits or carry them over. They do a kit to convert the No4 to 7.62x39.
It involves setting back the barrel, an insert for the magazine well and alteration, to the bolt and reciever. Uses single stack Roumanian 5 or 10 round AK mags.
I did send a No4 that had the barrel and wood shortened to them (so no originals were harmed in the process) Works very well

Oh by the way, Viper that looks like one of their conversions.

Where did you get it? I'd love to have a magfull of those...fire off 10, reload them.
Cheap 7.62x39 ammo...mmmmm....

Did I say where did you get it?????

I built a No4 into a 7.62 x 39mm a couple of years ago. I was actually quite supprized by the kick, I did not expect it at all. Fired fine and shoots reasonably accurately. Used the origonal barrel, set back and rechambered, .303 extractor was replaced with a .308 extractor I think but I'm not sure. Used Norinco bolt gun mags, I think I will try the Ruger Mini 30 mags though, I think they will fit better!
