In Japan carring for a sword was a tradion and a duty. You were its keeper. Until the yanks got in and destroyed them by the barge load, there were tens of thousands of heirlooms 400 + years old.
Contrast that to some European castles.
Stuff was hung on the wall and only maintained on the visible side. Governments that were being asked to fund the " museums" naturally wanted to inventory. Guess what they found!
