Shooting at Ranges in Canada

Good day all, It's a good thing this is a newbie forum because I've got some total n00b questions for you. So please be gentle, lol.

Essentially what I'd like to be able to do is go to a shooting range and be able to shoot targets. That's really it, I don't want a gun to have in my home or to carry one around with me. I don't hunt so I wouldn't need one for that either.

Is this possible in Canada? Do shooting ranges allow you to rent guns? The only way I'd really want to own one is if the range didn't have the kind I want. The gun I'm interested in specifically is an M1 Garand as I'm interested in WWII weapons, but of course I'd be willing to start small and work up to that.

Also, what would be entailed as far as legality goes, is there some sort of range only licence you can obtain or would I have to go through the same process as if I wanted to own a gun.

Thanks for your time.

Depending on where you live some ranges will allow you to rent a gun and shoot under supervision. It's a great way to try if you are unsure about wanting to shoot.

well, there are some ranges where you can just walk up, pay your fee, pick a gun and shoot. They're very scarce though, and odds of finding old milsurp rifles available at such a range are basically nil.

If you can hook up with a shooter and get them to bring you along as a Guest, that would work well.

99% of your options, honestly, are to get a licence, get a gun, and find a range to shoot at. A Garand might be a bit hard to find, but there's plenty of easy to find, inexpensive Soviet rifles from the WWII era out there.

A great deal depends on where you are. There are very few gun shops that also have ranges and rent firearms anywhere in Canada. None that will have an M1 Rifle to rent. Post where you are and maybe somebody who owns an M1 will be close to you and will take you shooting.
"...some sort of range only licence..." Nope.
"...don't want a gun to have in my home..." That'll go away the first time you shoot an M1 Rifle. There's something about 'em that no other rifle has.

My apologies, I'm in Halifax NS.

Thank you for all your kind replies. :)

"...I'm in Halifax NS..." Hi. Put that in your profile. Your next question should be, "Is there anybody in the Halifax area, who owns an M1 Rifle, who would let me shoot it?" Shooters are a friendly bunch who will help a new guy if they can.
