I recently built a shooting bench that I found plans for on the internet. It is made from a single sheet of plywood, breaks down into 5 pieces, and is comfortable to sit at. The instructions didn't say to add them, but I added some brackets to strengthen it. All you need is a skil saw, straightedge, jigsaw, and some time.
Here is the link, the plans are hard to read, but weren't in the light in my garage.http://www.realitysurvival.com/

I put several coats of tung oil on it, it should be safe, but I have no plans of leaving it out in the elements. I think I will have to put a drink holder of some sort on it tho. I routed a small groove on the top to keep rounds from falling off. $40 for a sheet of birch plywood from Rona and about 3 hrs of my time.
One pic looks like it is on an angle, but that is just the pic, not sure why it looks that way.

There is one part of the plans that is not explained. The large radius in the largest upright piece. I had to scratch my head for a bit to figure it out. Draw a straight line from the rear flat point 12 inches in to the top part 14 inches in, go 12 inches in on the line between the 2 points from the rear, make a 12 inch radius from that point. Worked ok for me. Glad I could share, not my plans, but if you search "portable shooting bench" and look at images, you can find examples where they cut holes to lighten it as well. I haven't, not too concerned about the weight. I forgot to mention, you will need a drill and at least a 3/8 bit so you can make the starter holes for the small square holes you need to make in the top. For me, it took longer to draw it all out on the sheet of plywood than it did to actually cut it. I'm paranoid when it comes to working with wood, if you cut parts too small, you can't make them larger. Measure twice cut once my dad taught me, I measure more than twice, keeps me out of trouble. If you check out that website, there is a video of it being assembled. It takes about 30 seconds to assemble it. Have fun.

I have plans around here someplace for a portable shooting bench I bought from Jim Carmichael years ago. Has steel pipe legs and plywood top. Have to look for it. Being a lefty I have to reverse everything all the time.

This bench is usable for righties and lefties. The way it is designed, you take the top off, then turn the back support 180 degrees, flip the top over and put it back on. Then you have a leftie bench. Very cool that way.

That is neat! Thanks for posting. I'll have to give it a go. One of my gunner friends has two shooting ranges at his place. He built two nice big shooting benches.
