Shooting cast bullets in a Rem XCR Tactical .308Win.

Hi guys!
I was toying with the idea to shoot "some"(1-200) cast bullets as accurately as possible (with the guns I own).

I will keep my velocities around 1200- 1500fps.
To try to keep the leading from occurring.
The alloy is close to Lynotype(hard). And a crimp on gas check will be used.

Has anyone experienced any problems with accuracy after switching back to jacketed bullets to shoot 1000-1300 yards?

I dont want my curiosity of shooting cast bullets to jeprodize the potential of my long range .308 rifle.

Give me some thoughts & ideas guys.
 
You can load those cast to 2000fps if the fit and lube is good, without worry about leading. You should clean all the copper jacket fouling out of the barrel as it could cause leading. Unless you get alot of leading, you can switch back to jacketed anytime, don't need to clean, but I would clean the jacket fouling each time before using cast. Another concern is barrel twist, what twist is that? I have not found good accuracy with cast and fast twist barrels.
 
DT you try it and get back to us. I won't use cast bullets in my high end target rifles. I know what is in the lead still, after I don't know how many times fluxing it(4). The biggest is the different alloys that could be in it. Then theres the dust.
I prefer to use cast bullets in my hunting class guns. I shoot cast in my 30-30, 303, hunter class 308 and 45-70. I will launch some lead cast out of a Savage 116 FHSAK 308 aiming for tree tops with a Bushnell 3200. Just for giggles.

What kind of flux do you use?
I have been using " Marvlux".

I need to get a big pot to prep a larger volume of a single alloy.
And a bigger pot helps in cleaning out the junk like sand.etc

I would like to shoot my tactical .308 with cast, but I dont want to any harm to the bore.
What kind of alloy mix you use?
 
Marvlux ate out the first lead pot so I switched to wax and sawdust for fluxing. Each time there would be more crud, dust coming out of the lead. My source for lead was a indoor shooting range. Plus all the local tire shops for wheel weights. My melting pot would hold 2 - 5 gallon pails of range scraps and wheel weights mixed. So the lead could have some zink in it or what ever else started to melt before I skimmed it off. The big pot had about 60% pure lead from range scraps and 40% wheel weights. This would make 50 2 - 3 lb ingots(Dollar store cupcake tins blackened with acetylene). This stuff works awesome in the pistol molds and 45-70 molds. Most pistol bullets get quenched by dropping in a 5 gallon bucket of water. When I cast bullets I add 12" of 1/8" soldering tin for mold fill out. I still won't use my cast bullets in my target rifle!! Unless its near the end of the barrels life cycle. Say after 6000 rounds down the pipe.
 
I agree, don't use Marvellux, it rots things, I respectfully disagree with not using cast bullets in a match rifle, that's the best way to test your cast bullets. Your barrel will last forever, any impurites will still be softer then copper jacket material. If you are still worried about impurities, just weigh all your cast bullets and segregate down to 1/10 th of an ounce, a bullet with even the smallest impurity will weigh less. I would be more concerned about impurities in the copper and the throat erosion from using high pressure loads and jacketed bullets. Some very serious and winning old time cast bullet benchrest shooters have been using the same barrel since time began.
 
I havent had Marvlux rot anything yet.
It seems to help hugely with mould/groove fill out and form.

Is there anything I could do to reduce the corrosion of the marvlux?

I also like how the marvlux doesnt smoke so bad.

Wish I had a big lead pot like Tigrrs, to melt/ alloy my lead.
It sure would help in creating a consistant alloy supply!
 
I weight segregated some cast bullets last week, and shot them out of my 7.62X39, Ruger Hawkeye.
I had one five shot group print the first three shots under a 1/2"!
I was pretty excited at that point, till shots 4 & 5 expanded the group to 2"! BooHoo!
It was fun!
I hope I can produce 1-1/2" or better consistantly at 100.

My .303 British also did very well!
2"- 2-3/4" with a couple load combinations.
I had to set the Vernier site to 700 yards to achieve point of aim at 100.
FUN STUFF!!!
