We will be at a family reunion in Holden in early August and I am wondering if the gophers will still be up and about? Does anybody on CGN have any info about this area? What are the licence requirements for BC residents to shoot gophers? My kids (11 to 15 ) could really get into this. Does the Sunday ban include gopher shooting? My wife has relatives in the area so we can probably get permission somewhere, but local info ahead of time would be nice.
Sorry for all the questions but gopher shooting is a blast and I would like my kids to have a go at it.

Oh my GOODNESS you will have fun.

Gophers are considered nuisance animals in Alberta. As such no license is required.

From the Alberta Agricultural Pests Act
Methods to control nuisance
An owner or occupant of land may control a nuisance on that land by means that are generally considered to be sound husbandry practices and that comply with all applicable laws.

Fire at will.

Of course all other rules of firearms posession would apply - you technically need to be within arms reach of someone with a PAL/POL at all times. Under your control, if you will. Shoot safely and have fun!

Holden is a bit NE of Camrose, not necessarily the best gopher country. August is also a bit late, and they've had some rain which means some gophers drown in the hole. Don't mean to discourage you, by all means you're legal to go, but I wouldn't get your hopes up for a real good shoot. Good luck anyways. :)

Find a farmer who winters/feeds cattle out in the pasture. The gophers are always in there thick as thieves. The wasted feed attracts them like flies to turds.

Thanks for the info guys. If we could find enough gophers to burn a couple of boxes of .22LR I will be happy.

I don't think you'll have a problem burning up a couple of boxes of 22LR, I just spent an hour and a half in a pasture east of Calgary and shot 50+ gophers. Could have shot 200 of 'em if the grass wasn't so darn high. Damn that 2 weeks of rain!!

was just out (till 6;30). They are indeed getting hard to spot. I used the hill side & crests, shot 4 boxes of 22. They will stand more to look around in the tall stuff but want to be close to holes. also got a crow & a double on pigons, yes I potted them on the ground. was fun the first day in a while that was not windy or raining. Good luck & check pastures that have stock in them, the grass is shorter. AJ
