shooting in U.S.

because if you just get a match invitation they will only issue you a form 6 for the match. if you get a hunting permit, you get it for a year. however when i am travelling i take a copy of the match invitation with me as back up.

Bull!

Form 6 is good for a year! Just bring each invitation with you when you cross and you can enter as many times as you like. Put all the guns and ammo that you will ever bring into the US and you can shoot any matches you like!

How do you manage ammo when going south?

What do you put on your form 6 for quantity/type of ammo?

Can you bring back to Canada any un-shot ammo?

If I enter the states with 500 rds and return with 500 rds....will questions be asked? (match cancelled?)

Can you bring back ammo for a gun not listed on your form 6?

Manage? - If I am driving the ammo is in the trunk of the car, the same as if driving to a local range. If flying you are limited to 11 pounds, that must be securely packaged, declared to the airline and separate from the gun; I use MTM type boxes.

My form 6 for ammo:
various headstamps-reloaded / Ball or JFP / 40 S&W / 1,500
etc.

You can bring back the un-shot ammo, subject to Canadian laws. In fact the US requires that you take unfired ammo back with you (Form 6 only allows temporary importation - when you leave the ammo and guns leave).

With a US hunting license you will be able to buy ammo that is not on your Form 6, BUT you need a US Export Permit to leave the US with that ammo.

apply for a form 6 with just a match invitation and see if you get one for a year or just for the match.

Shooting in the US.

It is really fairly easy. I am going to SHOT show this upcoming week in Vegas. Well I am actually going early and going to pick up a IDPA night match in the Vegas area. I applied for my Form 6 NIA last night and received it today. Voila, I am done for paperwork. I am off and ready to have fun. Easy as that.

How do you guys get the North Dakota Hunting license without their Hunter Safety course? Or do you still have your old Alberta Cert?

I'm working down here and wouldn't mind plinking gophers or cans on the lax days, and want the ND license to avoid the above mentioned "Alaska is North" issues at the crossings...I would like to shooot the odd match down here, but I have to find time to fit it in with the rig schedule/nonschedule..haha

It's been years since I took that course and truth be told lost the certificate god knows where or on which move.

I think the North dakota is only good until the end of March, but the Alaskan small game is good up until Dec 31st of the year purchased. Unless you plan on travelling to a match really early in Jan, I think the way to go would be the ALaskan.:)
