Shooting matches

The invite from the club you intend to shoot at must be attached to your application for the US.

Bob

This is not true. I have only ever applied for my 6NIA with a hunting license and I shoot 12 - 15 matches per year in the US, as well as hunt there.

Item #20 on the form instructions tells you to use a hunting license if your shooting event does not qualify for the exception.

You can write so I assume you can read. If you are applying for a Form 6 you must either attach a copy of your hunting license OR your invitation to Shooting event. My Letter is a annual invite to attend NWPPA IDPA events held through out the year and is dated 2009. If you don't send in a valid hunting license or an invite to a shoot they will not send you a completed Form 6. Simple.

Getting into the US with your handgun/hunting rifle is part of the problem. You are still subject to Fedreal and State Laws. Washington State legislation allows me to be in possession of a firearm if I am attending a Shooting event or am passing through the State to or from a Shoot or hunting in Washington or travelling to or from a US destination for hunting purposes. If neither of the above I am in violation of State Law and the judge won't give a damn how many Form 6's I have in my pocket. Every State is different and you want to guide yourself accordingly.

Maybe you should re-read your own post. It's post #8.

I have NEVER attached a match invitation to my 6NIA application. I have ALWAYS used a hunting license, and on a few occasions it has been an Alaskan license. As I am in God's country (that's Ontario, for you westerners) all of my travel with firearms has been in the northeastern states.

I was merely pointing out that your all-inclusive statement is not correct.

Is the pissing contest over yet? :D

Re-read my post. What I said there was correct, contrary to your comment.

I have yet to run into a shooting club who wouldn't give you an invite to their club shoots. Once in hand you copy it, attach it to your Form 6 and you are good to go for a year. Why screw around with paying for a hunting license or worry about some LEO making an issue out of the fact you are in NY with an Alaskan hunting license with firearms. Tough to tell him you are on your way to Alaska. Your Form 6 gets you into the US, after that you are at the mercy of local and State laws. If you never get stopped it won't matter; if you do, it might.

We almost always get pulled in to check serial numbers by US Customs. Occasionally, we get waved through but that's rare at North Dakota crossings.

I prefer the match invitation over the hunting license, as it is free (I'm cheap) and it accurately reflects what we are doing and where we are going.

We get the occasional agent who has not seen the Form 6 before and this requires a lot of explaining. I would not want to try to explain why we are going to a pistol match with a hunting license to the uninitiated.

WOW is all I have to say here... if you'd all re-read the Form6 instructions you'd all find your answers... you are all right... all you need is a state issued Hunting license from any State even Hawaii or a match invitation or a ticket to a gun or hunting trade show... A hunting license will get you in at anytime a match invitation will get you in for those dates... the ATF Form 6 is your legal document, ".... in order to demonstrate your possesion of the firearm(s) and ammunition in the United States will be lawful". also "... you must ensure that no State or Local laws in any state you will be travelling through phohibiting your possesion of the firearm(s) or ammunition you are seeking to import" although you may have a match invititation and or a hunting license you may still be in violation of State Law... but those are mainly due to criminal convictions... so you see you are all correct... having just a hunting license is ok and just a match invite is fine as well no Federal charges will ever be laid ... it's those pesking State Laws you need to be aware of...

Here is the key point, YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO BE IN THE USA! ATF has said that they prefer the hunting license as it means less paper work for them, one license rather then invites for every match. License will get the form 6 approved but just because you have one doesn't mean the border agent is going to let you in because, YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO BE IN THE USA. Having an invite to where you are going is cheap insurance.
Its not a complicated process, if you find it to be then you're an idiot. If you fall into that category Don't bother flaming me because I don't give a #### what you think.
