Shooting non corrosive ammo after corrosive to clean out.....

We all know that vehicles get covered in salt in the winter. Do you coat your vehicle in mud afterwards so that the salt wont rust the body?

Non corrosive will not clean out or burn off all of the salts in the barrel and gas system.

Umm... No... Think about it for a bit.

First off, the fouling gets deposited in layers and builds up over time. The fouling from the first thing you shoot will be closest to the metal, and the last thing you shoot will be deposited "on top."

I've heard the rumour before, but like the others have said, doesn't make much sense when you think about it. On the flip side, I would never trust it to not rust, but it makes more sense to me to shoot non corrosive first, then the built up carbon layer may provide some sort of barrier between the metal and the corrosive material. I wouldn't do this thinking you don't need to clean the gun afterword, but it makes more sense than firing a few rounds afterword.

I often wonder if the the guys on the ground in third world countries fighting for there banana Republic dictator types ever had problems due to lack of maintenance. I have a tea kettle of water on the hot plate on the work bench for when I get home from the range. Boil and oil, easy peasy. Tried all of the other "tricks". They all work to an acceptable level but a kettle of boiling water down the pipe, through a fitted funnel Is the easiest. Clean the gas system just a bit and you clean the rest when it's "convenient". I have seen a few SKS now that have been neglected, it ain't pretty. So when you crack off that last round of cheap milsurp ammo, think of that slappy, in the jungle, with his SKS.
Be well

I have a test SKS that I "neglect" on purpose. By neglecting I mean only using oil (CLP) patches (wet&dry) and brush. Never used water, boiled water, windex, piss or liberal tears to clean it. I clean it just like I would clean a C7/C8 at work. I dont see any difference in the overall condition of the rifle or its accuracy.

This SKS has seen thousands of rounds and is used to introduce people to shooting and as a loaner rifle

I had a sks i tried all sorts of cleaning methods on.

My favorit was start the shower and bath it real quick and let it air dry dismantled. Worked every time and had a great bore.

I used snythetic mottor oil to clean and oil.
