Im about to buy a decent thousand dollar rifle- is it bad form to shoot the cheap norinco 308 from it? Will I screw the barrel?

Chances are you wont like the results in accuracy .. and bad ammo or high volume shooting of bimetal does wear faster. There are a lot of factors at play here, but it's all trad-offs in one form or another. Unless you can add info about rifle, intended shooting use etc.. there isn't much more to say.

Don't do it. If you buy a nice rifle, treat it with nice ammo.....
I have never personally tried a test to see a difference, but I have read numerous times that its hard on things.

That norc is for rapid firing through m305s

Didn't that Norc .308 ammo get tested by someone on CGN? I remember that it showed dangerous pressure signs.

At any rate, why would you treat a decent gun to that crap?

Bunch of parrots... ;)

My buddy has a Rem700 5r with a round count of ~9,000.
Approx half were them fast wearing, bi-metal, junk rounds.
9,000 rounds later, it's still sub moa with handloads.

Op, it's junk ammo with poor accuracy, but a ton of fun to bang gongs with.

Shoot it. If you happen to shoot it enough, and somehow dislike how it's shooting, rebarrel Or sell it.
Happiness is a shot out barrel. Chances are you'll get tired of it long before the barrel is affected anyways.

Hehehe yeah, let me clarify a little more, high volume as in hot barrel semi. I doubt bolt action plinking is going to be causing a problem anytime soon.

I entirely agree. I bought some and it was really variable to put it mildly. Even at 100 metres there was significant variation, and that was in a Norc M305. The 'cheapest' I now go is Austrian surplus 308 which I really like and is accurate. (It is not even remotely accurate, why buy it?)

For a good gun, it is not even worth discussing, don't do it!

Candocad.

This.
It won't give satisfying groups but it'll be better than not shooting.

Put a lot of NORC through my TRG 22, warm up barrel at start, blow away all the abandon clays at end of day. Accuracy sucks but more than adequate for clay at 200m at 40c a shot. Not wasting hand loads on clays. 308 barrel last way too long anyway, burn it out, rebarrel to 260 :)

I've run 5.56 Norinco through my custom 223. Accuracy is poor but better to use that to warm up a barrel than my precision hand loads. If the accuracy is good enough through yours to hit clay pigeons even at 100y, you'll still be having fun and practicing that much needed trigger time.

put it this way, you have a ferarri you dont tend to use the lowest octane gasoline you can find do you? my guns are no different, if i want big bang and lots of it, i will take out a disposable sks and a crate. if i take out the nice girls, i feed em rite.

Shoot it, you'll be a better shooter sending 1000 junk rounds down range then 50 "Ferrari" rounds. The guys can worry about wearing barrels out will never shoot enough to wear a barrel out.

First of all you can get more then 50 ferrari rounds for the cost of 1000 norcs. Also I wouldn't be interested in buying a used expensive bolt gun that someone shot the cheapest ammo on earth with. Why would I want a gun that is now warn in, in a bad way, and therefore less accurate and shorter life. Though I know all the kind hearted souls on this site would let me know beforehand right??? I wouldn't do it on a expensive gun, of course people have different definitions of expensive gun. Heres what I think. 2 grand or less I would shoot norc through it, more then 2 grand and I wouldn't touch it.
