Hello
I have been blind in my left eye since birth. I recently got a Glock 17 gen 5 and am in the process of considering optics for this gun.

I have been shooting for years and have no trouble using iron sights or scopes but have never tried red dot or some other types off electronic sighting options. I am sure I am not the only one eye shooter out there,

Do I need binocular vision to use a red dot sight? If so what options are there for a one eyed fat man.

I built a one pc offset mt for a good friend last year(1.5 inch off center to the left) that worked fine.He is 92 years young and is happy to get out to the range again.DSC02695.jpg

If your in the GTA give me a PM, we can go to Target Sports Canada and you can shoot my RDO all day long. :)

Thanks folks, Since I have been blind from birth I have no idea what depth perception is when explained by someone who is bifocal. I suppose my brain has compensated for it because if we were out talking about shapes/forms/distances ect and you didn't know i was blind in one eye I can keep up with most. The place where I do have an issue would be in fast action racquet sports with a ball like tennis, ping pong etc.

As far as shooting I can use iron sights and scopes and because I am blind in the left eye shoot right. Funny thing is that I am right handed for writing etc, and shoot a gun right, but in hockey and golf I shoot left handed. These are ways without even knowing that my brain and body have compensated for the blind left eye. I have never let is stop me and try everything so I am thinking red dot might be the same but when watching videos they talk about target acquisition with one eye as you look through the sight with the other so dont want to get hundreds of dollars into a project and find out it is impossible.

Thanks for the offer but i am about as far away from the GTA as you can get without leaving ON.

Alright then, if you still want to try a RDO I would be willing to ship you my Vortex Venom for you to try. All I ask is you return it in good faith. PM if interested.

Thank you for that incredible and generous offer but I think my plan of attack on this one will be to see if anyone at our local club is running different optics and see if I can take a few shots using theirs.

We have a small club operation here and I can go to the local range most days and have the place all to myself. Since i am new to it I really have not met a lot of the pistol shooting community members but will put out a note to see if I can meet someone some time and at minimum try out sighting through.

My next option is a range in Winnipeg 3.5 hrs away to see if they have rental units with different optics that i can try.

not to be a downer but be aware that if you have astigmatism, the crisp dot will look more like a fuzzy starburst when you look through the rds.

some people say they've had luck putting it on lowest setting, others have said that a green RDS vs red RDS works much better for them.

Roger that, offer still applies if you have no luck. All the best Gindryden

Ok so I bit the bullet this morning. Was looking through the Cabela sight and they had a thanksgiving sale with free shipping. On top of that they also had the Burris FastFire III Red Dot Reflex Sight - 3 MOA Dot Reticle on sale for $269 which was almost $120 off the regular price. Also ordered a WOLTIS LONJN mount for Glock 17 from A-Zon. Hopefully it will all be in next week and I can give it all a whirl. If it does not work I will be listing it all on the EE.
