I was shooting my 22 fairly quickly the other day and my buddy said to watch out or I would "smoke my barrel" (he meant I would ruin it)

How long can one expect the barrel on a 10/22 to last?

How many rounds can be put through a 10/22 in quick succession without ruining the barrel?
Is it safe to shoot 500 rounds in a few hours? Would having a heavy barrel last longer?

Sorry in advance if this is a silly question

Thanks for the info,

A .22LR should be fine for many years.

Now if you were shooting a hot cartridge such as a .204 Ruger, a 220 Swift or a 300/378 Weatherby; then yes, excessive shooting at elevated barrel temperatures could prematurely erode a barrel.

I don't know of any scientific tests but I really doubt a person could afford enough loaded magazines to ruin a 10/22 barrel.

If someone wishes to provide the ammo, magazines and speed loader I would be willing to do the test though.

the whole point behind a .22lr semi is to be able to blaze away as fast and as often as you want.

shooting out the barrel on a .22lr semi is nearly unheard of. Hell even full auto ones go for a long time.

and you will only get leading issues if using LRN ammo. Plated stuff not so much. some minor copper fouling may occur. I can find zero of either on any of my .22lr firearms. And I have one from the mid 1950s :)

LOL, you will probably not live long enough to shoot-out a 10/22 barrel.... what are they good for? Oh I would say a few hundred thousand rounds! It will lead up long before you can do any damage to it shooting. A .22lr just doesn't produce enough heat.

Thanks for the responses.
I figured if it was a .223 then putting over 500 rounds through it in a couple hours wouldn't be something good to do on a regular basis but I didn't think it mattered with a .22lr

I have a friend who has 10/22 and has fired about 50 000 rounds. The only problem he had over the years was a firing pin. Barrel is just fine. Shoot away.

Think of the am180
275 round drum

Dumps in 10 secs iirc. The barrel gets smokin hot.
I wouldnt pour water on it but drum dumps if fine.
Look at all the people with gsg 110 round mags.
Have you heard of any owners complaining about barrel damage?

I have a small collection of older .22 rifles - all shot at 50m.

1. BSA Model from 1910 fitted with BSA tang sight - shoots 1/2" ten-shot groups.

2. Walther Sport Model from 1930 - my dad's rifle - a semi-auto/bolt-action hybrid - ten-shot groups inside 3/4" with a x2.5 original scope.

3. Walther DSM from 1934 - ten shot groups around 3/4" - open sights.

4. Mauser ES350B with matching x3.5 scope from 1937 - ten shots around 1/3".

5. 1957 BSA Martini MkII Intl right-hand - ten shots in a raggedy hole with a Tasco T70 scope.

6. 1962 left-hander - with a x18 Unertl 2" Supe Target scope - same group.

7. 1967 Anschutz Model 1409 SL with Tasco T70 scope - same size group.

Added up they have probably shot more round than there are people in the UK, who knows? I shoot the bejazus out of all of them without much thought - today alone three of them had around 500 shots down them at the guest day.

My drum used to jam up and cause me grief, but after taking it apart, and rewinding the spring, plus loading it carefully it works great now.
