Shooting rats

What airgun (rifle or pistol) can I use to shoot rats(squirrels too) with. There used to be a lot of cats in my neighbourhood - there would easily be about half a dozen who would prowl thrugh my backyard on a regular basis - and for the longest time no sign of any rats. Now there are maybe one or two cats that I see with any regularity and as a consequence the rats have become more evident. (My next door neighbour's cat - a big black tomcat that weighed 22lbs and as mean as a rattlesnake - was particularly efficacious in this regard - dogs would not go near this thing nevermid the rats). Anyway I have had enough of the rats - they are causing damage to my veg garen & my fruit trees - I hate the little f***ers and can't wait to send them to hell. I am really frustrated because one day I saw a stationary rat on a concrete wall from my back porch. If had had some kind of airgun in my hands I would have had a clear shot at him and would have easily taken him out. If not an airgun then possibly some other type of weapon - crossbow, slingshot etc. Maybe instead a small dog I could sick on them. Any ideas?

Most airguns have enough velocity to take out rat. Squirrels need a little more consistent oomph for a humane kill, but with rats.... (I hate rats!)..... even a C02 pistol will do them. I used to use a Crossman 357 C02 pistol to finish them off if they were still alive after being caught in my traps. The odd one I shot in the garden if they were hanging around the bird feeder. (Had to get rid of the feeder.) rifle would be best for longer range engagements.

But be advised, you will be hard pressed to eliminate them by shooting. They'll breed faster than you can get them in your sight picture!
