Was having varried results with my skeet shooting performance so I did a little home research.

All loads were fire from the top barrel of a Tikka 412s 28" Briley companion tube choked skeet. Chrony was set at 3 yards.

Factory Challenger 3/4 oz #9 1315 fps
Factory AA 3/4 oz #9 1275 fps
Reload AA HS 3/4 oz #9 1210fps
Reload challenger 3/4 oz #9 1225 fps

Load data for Longshot from Hodgdon with AA wad states 1200 fps and is quite accurate.
Challenger Hulls shot 15 fps faster with same data. No wonder I was busting more birds with the challenger load.....

Andy

Next I will switch around primers and wads. Will repost when I do my research.

I hate to tell you this, but the +15ft/sec that you see in the Challenger hulls only breaks more targets because you think it does.

Perhaps they pattern better in your barrel.... but 15fps should be pretty much negligable. If you were talking 200-400fps, then you'd have a case.

3/4oz... are you shooting 28ga? You mention 28" but not the bore.

Next time you are out, try putting the same shells on paper to see your pattern. That may have more of an effect on your scores.

If you are having varried results, have someone watch you shoot to make sure you aren't having physical problems like head lifting, or bad mounts. From there keep practicing, lots. I find that I have troubles being consistant every year until I get 4-5k targets in.

Your milage may vary....

Brad.

100 fps difference from my reloads to factory Challengers. Yep its a 28. Bore does little to affect ballistics. Might have different affect on pattern.
Thanks for the tips.
Andy

Yes, Challengers run hot. The target loads I've seen are usually between 1300 and 1350 (even if they say 1200 on the box).

Challenger 20ga have wrecked many auto loaders, and subgauge tubes (Don't tell Briley you were using Challenger if you crack a tube).

Challenger 28ga are my favourite factory load.

There have been suggestions that a higher velocity load out of some barrels will cause a wider pattern. Not great for trap, but at the closer targets in skeet, perhaps it's why your breaking more targets.

The lead difference, with the shot string from any of those loads should not be a factor. Any of them should break targets if your on them, and shoot an open choke.
