shooting rest?

I think it depends on what you are trying to sight in for. if you are going to sight in for range shooting and plan to use the rest a lot , the Caldwell rig will probably work out. If it's field shooting you are sighting in for. Maybe not . Some rifles are very forgiving on the type of rest they like, others change point of impact quite a bit between a hard or soft rest.
I use sand bags for working up loads and rough site in . When I am getting ready for the field I use a front sand bag , with my arm resting on the bag between the wrist and elbow, closer to the wrist. and no rear bag. I feel that is as close to my type of field shooting I can duplicate and still be some what stable . If you are going to give that long range TV crap a try. They seem to always shoot over a backpack . Then use that to sight in with.

I prefer to use a sand bag to support my forearm whilst my arm etc hold onto and support the rifle. Then you press into the sandbag and not try to hold the rifle firm by pressing down into a rest. Even with my bipod I still try and support or anchor the forestock with my arm to prevent jumping.
