I know that you can't shoot a pistol (restricted firearm) at home, that it must be at an approved range. But does that apply for all restricted weapons? Would a restricted rifle be allowed to fire at home? The site abides by the laws for gun shooting within the municipality (i don't live in the city). thanks

No, nope, nada, verboten, forget it, no way, etc, etc. There is no distinction between a restricted handgun and restricted rifle.

"...make my backyard an approved range..." Depends on local by-laws. If you live in town, forget it. If there is anybody(houses) or anything(any kind of building or livestock) within several kilometers behind your backstop, forget it. You can't use the lake as your fall zone either.
"...irrelevant to the OP's question..." So is mag capacity.
