Have you guys tried any of the sabots in your smoothbore shotgun?
I have a friend who swears by the Winchester supreme partition gold sabots and claims tight groups @50m with his smoothbore...
The advantages of using a premium jacketed bullet (385gr) going @2000 fps are obvious - this easily matches the factory Marlin 450 loads and a lot of hot 45-70 loads...

Yes, I have for ####'s and giggles. If your friend claims that, get him to take you to tthe range and show you.

The bullet ends up tumbling and ends up random on the target. At 100 yards we could hit a 4x8 sheet of plywood, but not accurately.

This is a waste of money as Foster Slugs are 1/3 the cost and are accurate to at least 75 yards.

8"

Federal sabot 12ga. Benelli Nova 24' bbl 8" repeatable groups @ 100yds,= Minutue of Moose for me.

Rfled slugs are much cheaper and will deliver far better accuracy in a smoothbore.

actually the rifled slugs I like (Brenneke 3" mags) are not cheaper than the Winchester Supreme partitions - if you know how to find Brennekes for less than $3 a piece in Van... please let me know...
I need the slugs for <25m in case I ever have to deal with a charging bear when hiking in the wilderness - mostly for a piece of mind...
...and NO - I do not want to start yet another bear defense thread :)

this sounds pretty good to me...
I intend to get a few boxes of sabots and take them to the range for testing...
I will use one of my break actions to make sure there are no bore obstructions after every shot - just in case...
Since I will be shooting just 25m (and maybe 50m just for test) I think it may work...

I don't call 8" groups accurate for Partition Gold's. I shoot a BPS and can shoot 4" or less groups at 100 yards. And If I had time to pratice more, I'm sure that can be tightened up. I have no issues shooting over 150 yards with Partition Golds and keep good groups.

At the same time, you should have no issues with an 8" grouping or better with rifled slugs out of a smoothbore at 100" yards.

it really comes down to matching the gun to a brand of shell it likes, and pratice.

Shooting sabots out of a smooth bore is like throwing a football without spin. They will tumble and have poor trajectory. You are throwing your money out the window, and will get poorer performance than you would out of a foster slug, which is meant to be shot out of a smooth bore.

If this is simply for bear defence, go buy cheapo winchester rifled slugs for 1$ a piece. Problem solved. If you want to spend a bit more, Winchester rackmasters are a good choice. There is no way anyone can tell me sabot slugs shoot better than rifled slugs in a smoothbore barrel.
