I had been told that I shouldn't use steel shot in my win 2200 even if I had the choke bored out. It had something to do with the breech and the forcing cone. Is this true?
Partially, but also I don't think the steel is strong enough to shoot steel shot. It might work for a few shots, but eventually the hard steel shot might cause deformation of the barrel.
Altering the forcing cone will give you a better pattern and may reduce recoil as well, but if your choke has been opened up (at least modified or a little more is better) I am sure your barrel will be safe to fire the correct shell using steel shot.
yes an open choke and you will be fine most guys do not shot .enough shells to do any harm on the older guns .i hunt a lot and the number of shells fired in a season is not the many realy .mayby some water fouwlers shot more then the average guy would but then thy most likley have a gun for the job
