Say guys I have been thinking about getting some shooting sticks, as a first time deer shooter I am hoping that they will be benificial when I try and line up on my first mulie doe next month. Anyone tried these yet, thanks Greg

Very popular in Africa.

I wish I'd had a walking stick of some kind last year shooting my moose. Would have made for a more stable rest. Mind you, I still got the moose.

I always have my Stoney Point shooting sticks on me when in the field. They're light, compact when collapsed, and pretty stable. Not to mention they allow you to shoot from a sitting position, avoiding brush that can limit the effectiveness of rifle mounted bipods.

A friend has a monopod that extends to standing height, I'd like to try that out and see how it works. :D

I made myself a couple of these of various heights . http://www.varmintal.com/abifu.htm they take about 10 min to make and cost almost nothing. This way you can practice a bit with it to see if you like the concept, then if you want buy the stoney point sticks or safe your money and just use the DIY sticks.

Shooting aids like bipods or shooting sticks are nice the both have there distinct advantages/dis-advantages. But one disadvantage of both is that the faster you need to shoot the less use they are. There is no replacement for shooting from field positions prone , kneeling, sitting, off a fence post or tree. Personaly I find the most useful is the kneeling position, it is quick and good for 200 yards with practice.

I was out on the weekend coyote hunting with a buddy he had a bi-pod and I had the shooting sticks. And like it is when we finally got a response they com in fast. but he had mechanical issues with the bipod and my shooting sticks needed to be repositioned. We called in two on that stand one busted him the other busted me. That half second it took to reposition the sticks cost me the shot.

One thing I did was to use concret nails in the bottom instead of the 5 penny , they are more durable and make it into frozen ground a little better.
