Anyone done it? If so what was your reason and what did you learn?

I did it last year and I must say it was more difficult than I thought especially when the pack weighs 40 lbs and it's the 500m run down. My reasons? Since I'm not in the service, I thought it was a good learning experience and knowledge as a civie about marksmanship with your BOB on your back.

A ranger did it last year but he needed the padded strap to protect his shoulder from the recoil of hundreds of rounds of 303.

I have hand carried my pack mound to mound and dropped it to the side while firing. Not in a few years though.

The gas mask must be a challenge especially during the run down. But again, it's better to be exposed to such a situation where accuracy still needs to be met if one is going to be deployed. That one shot with the gas mask on would really need to count when it's for real I bet.

Been to 3gun events where there's a division called "trooper".
In essence it's more "open" than open division, but... You have to carry everything. That's right. Extra guns, parts, gear... But all of it man portable. There are also rules on how much water you must start with and the level of assistance you can accept from others. Basically you need to be self suffficient and carry all required ammo....
Shot trooper a few times, but these days I go tac-optics

Interesting...

A friend of mine once planned a biathlon match which was sort of a triathlon. Orienteer yourself to Point A and get your bolt. Go to Point B and get your ammo. Go to Point C fire the first part of the match. Point D for more ammo. Back to the firing point. etc.

Aren't you supposed to drop the pack when you come under fire, then retrieve it later? I think that was the purpose of the quick release strap.

To each his own. In my last annual C7 qualification I found the one added benefit of the gas mask, is it kind of meshed really nice with the eyepiece of the ELCAN. Solid anchor point IMHO!
Hence I had a pretty good tight grouping with it on. Strange but true.....

I can't argue with results, but normally, because of the construction of the mount, the zero on the Elcan will wander if you allow anything to touch it, be it the brim of a helmet, a gas mask eyepiece, or even the brim of a bush hat. Perhaps less so with the new mount and the spring that pulls down instead of up.

What exactly is the point of practicing much with the gas mask? We have not carried this thing in years. Do people get so much time on the range and ammo that we are practicing obscure techniques to win the last war?

Every time I see guys carrying a gas mask carrier with their tacvest its inevitably stuffed with notebooks, junk, and chocolate bars etc. yet none of the proper EIS needed to defend against CBRN attack. Strictly mirror commando stuff.
