Shooting without hearing protection?

I was at the range one day with some friends and someone asked me if I had ever fired my P220 .45 without ear protection on. I never had, and since they had been shooting skeet all day without any ear protection they, of course, made fun of me when I walked over wearing my big peltors. SO, after some hasseling I agreed to take a shot with the 45 without them. I immidiatly regreted it. I swear nothing could have prepared me for what it felt like. I'm curious if there is anyone out there who has ever made the same dumb mistake I did?
 
Yes, but not because I forgot 'em, because the real world doesn't allow for you to tactically insert ear plugs....but whenever possible, I always wear em, even started when duck hunting now, custom plugs is the way to go!!
 
only once,just got my first hangun a 357 mag fired 6 shots across the hood of a vehicle,made my ears ring for a month.You should have gotten them to fire it without ear protection instead!

I was going to ask what Military/LE would do. Do police get trained so they know what to expect if they ever have to fire while on duty? As far as I know the police here train indoors with hearing protection.

Hearing damage is definitely a concern with LEO's who use their pistols in the line of duty. However, many who have never remember hearing anything at all. I think it would be in their best interest if they atleast fired some rounds without hearing protection.

As for not wearing any, oh yeah. I've been there and done that with all my guns, Glock, AR, Shotgun etc etc.. Not something I enjoy especially pistols. Maybe those who thought wearing protection was funny will find it real funny when they're def and don't understand why you're laughing at the stupid hearing aids they now wear. You just can't legislate common sense. On a side note does your range not have a policy regarding protection?

last weekend someone was shooting .38super... man, I had 2 sets of earplugs and I still felt uncomfortable.
 
anyone who shoots with out hearing protection at the range on purpose is an idiot and I don't care what type of gun it is . It will cause long term damage that you will never get back . Have I forgotten them on the bench by accident , yes - once . now I have electronis earmuffs and love them .
Funny thing though , when I hunt I never use them and I don't notice any noise while making the shot , no ringing ears , nothing - a pop at best .
Its kinda weird .

You can readily get them made at establishments that sell/fit hearing aids.
They take a mold of your ear canal, and them manufacture the plugs to fit.
Cost wise, they are very, very inexpensive insurance...
Also, my advice is to 'double plug', i.e. use custom or foam plugs as well as
muffs, if you're going to be shooting pistols, AR's, etc, indoors.
If you have experienced physical pain, or had episodes where you're ears were 'ringing' after a high intensity exposure, chances are you have incurred some degree, however minor, of permanent hearing loss...
Look after your 'spectacle lugs' as like fingers, you only get one set, and they don't grow back!:eek:
 
I took a shot at a deer with my 30-06 over the box of a truck once. That was incredibly loud.
 
The only thing I've shot without protection once is my 22LR rifle. The rest (including my 22LR handgun) I shoot with 30dB NRR earmuffs. Also, whenever someone is shooting a .308 with a muzzle brake near me, I double-plug. No hearing damage yet (fingers crossed).
 
I killed my ears one day with one stupid shot sounded like I was at a 24hr rock concert however no ear damage but scared the baJesus out of me, shot a ground pig from out of a 3 sided carport with a 22-250 AI and a 2" ported muzzle break, Did not know what hit me. Rung my bell, and all my friends bells too! leason learnd.
I always wear it when shooting other than hunting.

Right you are, a good buddy of mine was 95% def in his left ear by age 17 from shooting shotgun and 22(in the trees) without hearing protection. Needless to say we both started wearing ear pro shortly after he found out.

I doubt very much that 22 rimfire will cause permanent hearing damage?

I get my hearing checked every year at work and have PERFECT hearing(well above average) and have regularly shot .22 rimfire all my adult life 20+ years without hearing protection?

Now for any of my other firearms I ALWAYS wear the foam insert earplugs or muffs and sometimes BOTH (especially for my 350 Remington Mag).
 
Growing up on farm... What ? ear protection?

Try being a little tike watching your old man sigh in his 308 and 30-30 , aahhhh that ring, thats probably why kids back then didn;t F-around with firearms - the noise makes a statment of importance, and instead used them with respect
