Hello folks,

Not sure if this is the right forum to ask these questions, so please direct me otherwise if I have asked in error.

The other day I was discussing shooting without a scope or iron sights with a friend and wanted to know if there was much information available on it. So I went to the internet and found some instinctive shooting videos and other suggestions on the net. Most however were pertaining to hand guns and I am looking to hone my skills with a rifle.

Any suggestions or marksmanship tips are welcome.

thank you

I guess you could look down the top of the rifle between 2 points on it but then adjust the point of impact accordingly. thats essentially what iron sights are. It wouldnt be very effective but you'd hit the side of a barn with a bit of practice. It's easier to just put sights on it.

The British Army used to teach shooting in the dark without using the irons. A sort of prone isosceles stance with a rifle. The RCMP are moving towards this apparently.

Thank you Juster. I will aim to find some resources on it as well. I have a fair bit of ammo, and given our current state of quarantine, I would like to spend my time honing the skill.

Still alive, ich habe ein neues rifle ohne sights gekauft und habe ich noch kein scope. But I don't mind pino coladas. :)

Some agencies still teach flash sighting... Fire a shot and use the flash to illuminate the target.... Correct aim fire again so on...

Still alive ...haha, I take it you were also kidding about the Pina coladas ;)

Yes one would need to shoulder the rifle, but as MkivSupra perhaps take two points on the rifle and shoot from there.
Hopefully my precision improves. Meanwhile, I will look for this thread you referenced.

What kind of rifle did you buy? Maybe we can suggest the right optics for it depending on what you want to do with it.

Shooting without sights on a regular basis is kinda of a handicap.

I purchased a Tikka T3X in 30-06 to hunt big game from a high seat.
Since it's mostly going to be between 100-200m and in the dark I've had the Zeiss Conquest 3-12 by 56 as a recommendation. When in Germany I use a friends rifle that is in a 7.62mm and the same Zeiss scope works great. Illuminated reticle helps :)

Are you taking your rifle back to Germany? We don’t normally hunt past sundown here.

The Tikka T3 is a nice Rifle. 30-06 will take most anything in Canada. Great trigger. Zeiss is good also. 3-12x is good magnification for your intended distance. Might be more than you need actually. I have a Tikka T3 Hunter 7mm Mag with a Zeiss Conquest 3-9 on mine.

Yes, I love the trigger break on the T3X. Moving firearms between countries is quite a task and I will most likely keep it here for now. And should I go hunting in the North of Quebec or in your neck of the woods is 3-9 still good?

On the topic of shooting without sights, I am currently researching the laserlyte and other options.

Look into shooting smooth bore muskets. Many of the competitive events using them say they can only have a front bead like a shotgun.
I've seen guys who are surprisingly good with them. There must be old military manuals or YouTube stuff describing how it's done.
