Im shopping for a set of quality rings for my Tikka T3. I would like a set of rings that Do Not need a base, and attach directly onto the grooves in the receiver. Which rings do you recommend?
I was hoping for other recommendations, I presently have a set of Weaver Quads on a Weaver style base and find them too high. I would like to have my scope as low as possible, Opti-locks are too high and have a reputation to be on the heavy side (not to mention, they don't look that good!!!).
If you go too low you run into the problem of the scope touching the barrel. You may be better of keeping the higher rings and adding to the stock (adjustable cheek piece) to get the right cheek weld.
I ordered the Leupold, medium height. I'm wondering if I could have gotten away with the low. Guess I'll find out shortly. I'll post the fit when I install.
talley makes a 1 piece ring/base. i use optilocks and luep. with med rings on the luep i have lots of gap between the barrel with a 6x42 scope mounted.
Millet offers a ring mount in stainless and black with windage adjust, $70.00. These do not require bases. Also Lynx makes a ring mount but without wimdage adjustment.
I have a set of Millets on my 6.5x55 Tikka and they are fine. However, I'm not sure if I would put them on a heavy recoiling rifle - the lips that grabs onto the groove seem a bit narrow. I am thinking of putting a set of Talley Lightweights on it - they attach to the pre-drilled mounting holes and not the groove on the receiver.
The millets have proven to be quite weak compared to other types of rings and bases. The leupold bases and rings are very strong and the price is much less than the optilocs. With low rings or super low rings, they can mount the scope very low.
Got the Leupold rings on my Sako finally, height is good, lots of room to move the VariX 2 3-9c back and forth to set eye relief and still have barrel/bell clearance. Would have liked a deep blued finish on them though instead of a black.
